The eyes are the windows of the soul, so they say, and when it looks tired, most people would interpret that the person looks sad. But tired, puffy eyes are not just signs of physical and emotional state, it can also be a sign of ageing.
HealthLine explains why the skin under the eyes may look puffy as a person gets older. “One of the main causes of puffy eyes is aging. The skin under your eyes is very thin, which augments any changes that may occur in your body as you age. Over time, the tissue in your eyelids can weaken. This can cause fat in your upper eyelid to fall, coming to rest in your lower eyelid. Fluid may also be more likely to get trapped in your lower eyelid as you age. Fluid retention is known as edema. The thin skin around your eyelid can cause fluid retention to be very prominent, resulting in puffy eyes.”

Blepharoplasty is one of the solution to ageing eyes. It is a surgical procedure that removes the fat or the excessive skin droop in the eye area. United Kingdom’s National Health Service explained this surgical procedure in their official webpage.
“The surgeon will normally apply thin, sticky strips called suture strips to support the eyelids after surgery. These are usually removed up to a week later. An upper blepharoplasty may take about one hour. Surgery on the lower lid may take up to two hours. Most patients can go home the same day.”

It is essential to follow post-surgery guidelines mentioned by the plastic surgeon. This is to ensure that no complications will arise and that the surgery outcome will result as planned.
Most doctors will advise the patient take a week off work or any regular routine activity to rest one’s eyes and fully recover from the operation. Help must be on hand especially during the first few days following the surgical procedure. The patient may not be able to do his regular routine at work, or chores at home including driving. It will be best to enlist the help of someone to assist during the first night at home, and for driving the first one or two weeks especially for post-operative check-ups.
