With the growth of the Church of God and the success ofTennessee Music Printing Company during the 1940s, someministers and laity requested the publication of a hymnalfor the denomination. After some time and discussion, ahymnal committee was eventually formed which included OtisMcCoy as editor and V.B. (Vep) Ellis and Zeno C. Tharp asassistant compilers. Ellis was a prominent minister, musician and songwriter within the Church of God, andTharp was a well-know minister and elected officialwithin the denomination.

Mary Louise Bringle, who chaired the Presbyterian Committee on Congregational Song which developed the new hymnal, recently wrote an article for The Christian Century and now the committee, the Office of Theology & Worship, the Presbyterian Association of Musicians and the Presbyterian Publishing Corporation, publisher of the new book, have issued a formal statement.

Our hardcover Church Hymnal features over 400 songs arranged for traditional piano and multi-part congregational singing. These are songs from between 80 to 120 years ago written for conservative Christian denominations by pastors, theologians, and everyday believers. These hymnals will fit in the back shelves of standard sized church pew benches, as well as the music desks of pianos and organs.

In 2005, Plymouth Church celebrated the 150th anniversary of The Plymouth Collection, considered by many to be the book that set the standard for modern hymnals.

Issued in 1855 as The Plymouth Collection of Hymns and Tunes; for the Use of Congregational Churches, the hymnal was compiled by Plymouth Church's first minister, the Rev. Henry Ward Beecher. Combining words and music on the same page, in an easy-to-hold format, The Plymouth Collection brought congregational singing into the church, and quickly revolutionized the sound and spirit of worship across America. Today, Christian churches throughout the world can trace the practice of full participation congregational singing back to Beecher and his hymnal.

Beecher wanted what he called "a singing church." He concluded that the way to accomplish this was to put the hymns--both the words and the music--into the hands of the congregation. What many experts also consider revolutionary was Beecher's concept of "usefulness," bringing together popular and singable music from many denominations. Joining Beecher in creating The Plymouth Collection were his brother, Charles Beecher, and John Zundel, the widely admired organist at the Church.

In the fall of 1855, The Plymouth Collection entered the pews of Plymouth, and full congregational singing became the church's hallmark. News spread quickly to churches of other faiths, and it was not long before Beecher's hymnal carried congregational singing far beyond its Brooklyn roots.

Historical and background information on the words, music, and sources of the selections in the Hymnal, essays on church music, biographical information on authors and composers, and indexes for the collection have been published as Hymnal Companions for the 1940 and 1982 editions of the Hymnal. During the work of preparing The Hymnal (1940), the Joint Commission on the Revision of the Hymnal realized that a historical handbook for the Hymnal would be an important resource for the church. In 1939 Canon Charles Winfred Douglas was appointed as chair of the committee to compile The Hymnal 1940 Companion. He was replaced in 1941 by the Rev. Arthur Farlander. The Rev. Dr. Leonard Ellinwood contributed extensive original research to complete The Hymnal 1940 Companion. It was first published in 1949. A second edition was published in 1951, and a third edition was published in 1956. The Hymnal 1982 Companion has three volumes and includes four books. Volume 1, including a variety of scholarly essays on hymns, service music, and the liturgical and pastoral context of hymnody, was published in 1990. Volumes 2, 3A, and 3B were all published in 1994. Volume 2 includes background on the service music in The Hymnal 1982 and biographies. Volumes 3A and 3B include background on the hymns. The Hymnal 1982 Companion also has indexes, glossaries, and bibliographies for further study. It was edited by Raymond F. Glover, general editor of The Hymnal 1982. It is published by Church Publishing Incorporated, formerly Church Hymnal Corporation, a subsidiary of the Church Pension Fund. Other hymnal companions published outside the Episcopal Church include the Historical Companion to Hymns Ancient & Modern (1962), and the Hymnal Companion to the Lutheran Book of Worship (1981). The English Hymnal is a hymn book which was published in 1906[1] for the Church of England by Oxford University Press. It was edited by the clergyman and writer Percy Dearmer and the composer and music historian Ralph Vaughan Williams, and was a significant publication in the history of Anglican church music.

The preface to the hymnal describes itself as "a collection of the best hymns in the English language."[2] Much of the contents was used for the first time at St Mary's, Primrose Hill, in north London,[citation needed] and the hymnbook could be considered a musical companion to The Parson's Handbook, Dearmer's 1899 manifesto on English church ceremonial, vestments and furnishings.[3][4]

The high quality of the music is due largely to the work of Vaughan Williams as musical editor. The standard of the arrangements and original compositions made it a landmark in English hymnody[5] and one of the most influential hymnals of the 20th century.[6] The hymnal included the first printing of several arrangements and hymn settings by Vaughan Williams. Among the most famous are Sine Nomine, a new tune to For All the Saints;[7][8] and Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones, a new text for the hymn tune Lasst uns erfreuen. The hymnal also includes many plainsong melodies (in both plainsong and modernised notation).

After its publication, use of the hymnal had been banned for a time by the Archbishop of Canterbury.[2] Ultimately, The English Hymnal, along with the Church Hymnal for the Christian Year, "undermined the uniformity of the Church of England and successfully challenged [the] hegemony" of Hymns Ancient and Modern,[9] which had been published two years previous.[10]

The book is a characteristic green colour and is sometimes associated with the high-church or Anglo-Catholic movement within Anglicanism.[11] When the book was published, high and broad churches used Hymns Ancient and Modern and evangelical churches normally used the Hymnal Companion to the Book of Common Prayer. The hymnal has, however, been adopted not only in various movements of Anglicanism but also in several other denominations in Britain, such as some Roman Catholic churches.[citation needed]
