P.R.I.D.E encourages our young children to embrace who they are, just as they are, children are in the beginning stages of noticing race and developing their own beliefs and feelings. I would like to see families step away from what they have learned as acceptance in the physical world and learn that without all the glitz and glam they are truly enough. At one point in my life, I personally thought that having long straight hair, being bright light almost white with makeup was the only look accepted by peers because these behaviors are what were broadcast on television and magazines. I have been on a natural hair journey for a little over 8 years and it took me some time to love my natural hair but, once I realized my beauty was within just as much as my physical appearance the love, I gained for my racial identity became top priority in my life. I learned to embrace who and what I have become, or shall I say what I have always been. True beauty lies within and is beyond physical appearance. It's a reflection of a person's character, values, and personality. I am committed to teaching our young children the importance of positive racial identity by incorporating picture books, videos, songs, dolls, art projects and table talks complementing each other and discussing how they feel about their appearance this will reflect each child's personal identity. This will also create great opportunities as our children grow, it will allow them to share their experiences, feelings, and positive racial identity development throughout the communities.
