After the founding of the SCS in 2016, a few members from Los Alamos, NM, started to attend the Annual Conferences in 2017 (Chicago), 2018 (CUA) and 2019 (Notre Dame). In 2018 and 2019, before formation of the Chapter, the local community and parish (Immaculate Heart of Mary) hosted talks by SCS members Dr. Aaron Dominguez (CUA) and Dr. Jonathan Lunine (Cornell, VP of SCS) on Faith & Science. In 2019, the SCS President (Dr. Stephen Barr) and Board invited members of SCS in New Mexico to form a Regional Chapter. In September 2019, with the participation of about 15 local members of SCS in the Los Alamos area, the NM Regional Chapter was officially recognized by the SCS Board, the first official Regional Chapter in the world. The Chapter has since grown to 33 full members (as of March 2021), including members in Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Taos, and Socorro. We welcome Catholic scientists in a broad array of fields, whether official members of SCS or not, to participate in our activities, please see link to signup below.
The Chapter aims to carry out the mission of SCS in the NM region by fostering fellowship amongst Catholic scientists, hosting talks on Faith & Science, and acting as a resource for the Catholic and general public on issues of Faith & Science. See the Events page for some of our activities.
The Chapter receives financial support in part from dues paid by members to the SCS, registration fees at regional Conferences, and donations. We do not at this time collect additional dues from Chapter members. Donations to the SCS and the SCS NM Chapter are tax-deductible in the United States under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
