Fauxhawk, a haircut similar to a Mohawk, is potentially the highest scoring newbie, he said. Embiggen, a verb meaning to increase in size, is among the unexpected. (Sample sentence: "I really need to embiggen that Scrabble dictionary.")

Compound words are on the rise in the book with deadname, pageview, fintech, allyship, babymoon and subtweet. So are the "uns," such as unfollow, unsub and unmute. They may sound familiar, but they were never Scrabble official, at least when it comes to the sainted game's branded dictionary.

Sokolowski and a team of editors at Merriam-Webster have mined the oft-freshened online database at Merriam-Webster.com to expand the Scrabble book. While the official rules of game play have always allowed the use of any dictionary that players sanction, many look to the official version when sitting down for a spot of Scrabble. Some deluxe Scrabble sets include one of the books.

"Yeehaw is like so many of the older, informal terms. They were more spoken than written, and the gold standard for dictionary editing was always written evidence. So a term like yeehaw, which we all know from our childhood and in movies and TV, was something you heard. You didn't read it that often," Sokolowski said.

Yeehaw, meet bae, inspo, vibed and vibing, all new additions to the Scrabble dictionary. Ixnay, which was already in the book, has been promoted to a verb, so ixnayed, ixnaying and ixnays are now allowed.

Zoomer, for a member of GenZ, is also new. Familiar with the Middle Eastern spice blend za'atar? A less common variant, zaatar, is now in the Scrabble dictionary. Words with apostrophes aren't allowed.

"All of these are words that have already been vetted and defined and added to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, and now we've determined they're playable in Scrabble," Sokolowski said. "You've got some fun new words."

Use this Scrabble dictionary checker tool to find out whether a word is acceptable in your scrabble dictionary. When you enter a word and click on Check Dictionary button, it simply tells you whether it's valid or not, and list out the dictionaries in case of valid word. Additionally, you can also read the meaning if you want to know more about a particular word.

Changes in playability of words for Scrabble are often direct results of how the dictionary treats a given word. Case in point: the venerable word VERB is now categorized itself as a verb, meaning that VERBED and VERBING are now playable. This phenomenon extends to other words newly verbed (see what we did there?) in this edition, including ADULT, TORRENT, SPITBALL, and RETWEET.

Here's the sitch, Scrabble stans. Your convos around the board are about to get more interesting with about 500 new words and variations added to the game's official dictionary: stan, sitch, convo, zedonk, dox and fauxhawk among them.

Beatbox, buzzkill, chillax, coqui, frenemy, funplex, jockdom, joypad, mixtape, mojito, ponzu, qigong, schmutz, sudoku and yuzu. Geocache was also added, voted into the dictionary by the public during a Facebook contest in May.

The Springfield, Massachusetts-based dictionary company sought counsel from the North American Scrabble Players Association when updating the book, Sokolowski said, "to make sure that they agree these words are desirable."

Merriam-Webster put out the first official Scrabble dictionary in 1976. Before that, the game's rules called for any desk dictionary to be consulted. Since an official dictionary was created, it has been updated every four to eight years, Sokolowski said.

"I think ew is interesting because it expresses something new about what we're seeing in language, which is to say that we are now incorporating more of what you might call transcribed speech. Sounds like ew or mm-hmm, or other things like coulda or kinda. Traditionally, they were not in the dictionary but because so much of our communication is texting and social media that is written language, we are finding more transcribed speech and getting a new group of spellings for the dictionary," he said.

Now, the official dictionary holds more than 100,000 words. Other newcomers Sokolowski shared are aquafaba, beatdown, zomboid, twerk, sheeple, wayback, bokeh, botnet, emoji, facepalm, frowny, hivemind, puggle and nubber.

Scrabble is a word game that follows a different dictionary than the traditional one. You can use a traditional English dictionary to read, write, speak, or understand English. You can also do these things using a Scrabble dictionary, but there are some complications.

A Scrabble dictionary can be beneficial for winning Scrabble, whereas a traditional dictionary might not be. The Scrabble dictionary has several words that do not exist in the traditional dictionary, and the traditional dictionary has several words that are not in the Scrabble one.

On the other hand, Scrabble uses a single dictionary and keeps adding new words. It uses an editorial process to check and remove negative words and phrases. You can use this dictionary to find all valid and invalid words in Scrabble.

You can use seven or nine-letter words in Scrabble as long as its dictionary allows them. On average, the longest words you can play in Scrabble are seven or eight-letter words. Nine-letter words are rare in Scrabble because they require two suitable letters already present on the board.

There is, in fact, a dictionary tool that Scrabble players can use to check if a Scrabble word complies with the rules! This official Scrabble dictionary tool is known as the OSPD, made available by Merriam-Webster. There are some words that may not appear on the online version of the Scrabble dictionary, so it may benefit you more to check for the shortened version of the word you are trying to find.

A dictionary word finder or word list will be a huge help when playing Scrabble. All you really have to do is enter the combination of letters you have in your hand and the online dictionary word finder will be able to help you find a word list including that combination. The word finder will also help you find the definition of the words, their synonyms, and whether the word is a verb, adverb, noun, or adjective.

You will be able to challenge a word that you may think will not be allowed in the game by requesting to look in the Scrabble dictionary. You must request to challenge the word before the next player starts their turn and places their own tiles. You can enter the word in our online checker and, if the word is not found in the Scrabble dictionary, then the player who placed the illegal word must remove the tiles they used and their turn will be lost. This may prove to become an advantage in any game of Scrabble, especially if you have extensive knowledge beforehand of the words that you can and cannot use.

Of course, not everyone has the word savvy to be able to remember all of the q-words listed in Scrabble's official dictionary. However, tools like WordFinder help word nerds practice their skills by showing them how to unlock the words hidden within their letter tiles. And if you're a word nerd on the go, you can download the WordFinder app to make sure that you've always got a helping hand when you need one the most.

In the original rules, a word list (dictionary reference) tells which word is an accepted solution or not (no proper noun). The program here is not limited and allows all kind of words, including conjugated verbs and sometimes some proper nouns.
