The Angry Birds Movie (also known simply as Angry Birds) is a 2016 animated comedy film based on Rovio Entertainment's video game series of the same name, produced by Columbia Pictures and Rovio Animation, and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. The film was directed by Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly (in their feature directorial debuts) from a screenplay written by Jon Vitti and a story by Mikael Hed, Mikko Pll, and co-producer John Cohen. It stars the voices of Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Kate McKinnon, Sean Penn, Tony Hale, Keegan-Michael Key, Bill Hader, and Peter Dinklage. The film follows Red (Sudeikis), an outcast in an island of anthropomorphic flightless birds, as he suspects a newly arrived crew of pigs led by Leonard (Hader) of plotting an evil plan, and attempts to put a stop to them with the help of his newfound friends Chuck (Gad) and Bomb (McBride).

Red, an angry bird, has been an outcast from Bird Island ever since he was a hatchling due to his short temper and his huge, jet-black eyebrows. When he accidentally causes a premature hatching of another bird's egg, he is sentenced to anger management class, which is the highest penalty allowed on the island. Two of Red's classmates, Chuck, who is hyperactive and can move at hypervelocity, and Bomb, who can cause explosions with his anger and fear, try to befriend him, but he avoids them.

One day, a boat docks at the island's shore, damaging Red's house. The birds greet two green-colored pigs, the captain Leonard and his assistant Ross, who claim to be peaceful explorers bringing offerings of friendship. They introduce the birds to various innovations, including a giant slingshot, but Red becomes suspicious of the pigs' motives and sneaks into Leonard's boat. He finds more pigs hidden below deck, contradicting Leonard's claim that he and Ross are alone. When he returns and shows everyone the other pigs, the birds accept Leonard's explanation that he only lied to see if Bird Island was safe for his simple-minded cousins.

Still suspecting that there is something off about the pigs, Red recruits Chuck and Bomb to find Mighty Eagle, Bird Island's missing protector and the only bird who can fly. They find Mighty Eagle on top of Eagle Mountain, but he has become an overweight, self-absorbed slacker who has not flown for years. Red discovers the pigs planting dynamite around the island. He realizes that the pigs are planning to steal the birds' eggs while the birds are distracted by a party. When Mighty Eagle refuses to help them, Red admonishes him. Red, Chuck, and Bomb race back to sound a warning to the other birds and stop the pigs, only for the pigs to start destroying the village by blowing it up with the dynamite. Chuck goes to warn the other birds while Red and Bomb give chase to the pigs. They try to untie the ropes to drop the eggs in the water, but it doesn't work, so Red tells Bomb to blow up the chain, but the pigs escape with the eggs and leave the village destroyed. The other birds apologize to Red for not listening to him. Red forgives everyone and under his leadership, they organize an army and build a boat from the rubble to follow the pigs to Piggy Island.

The birds discover the pigs living in a walled city ruled by Leonard, whose full name is King Leonard Mudbeard. Deducing that the eggs are in the castle at the center of the city, the birds use the pig's giant slingshot to attack by launching themselves over the walls and into the city's castle. Most of the birds miss the castle but destroy other buildings. Red, Chuck, and Bomb are successfully shot into the castle; the pigs plan to lower the eggs into a giant pot, cook them, and eat them. Mighty Eagle arrives to retrieve Red's group and the eggs, having had a change of heart. One egg falls out of the net and Red battles Leonard for it, but learns to control his anger and distracts him long enough to retrieve the egg. After they fall into a dynamite room, Leonard accidentally ignites the pigs' reserve of dynamite. The giant pot in which the pigs had intended to use to cook the eggs collapses, falls and lands on top of Red. The dynamite explodes, destroying the city, but Red and the egg he was holding are shielded by the pot.

All the families, except for one, reunite with their eggs. Red emerges holding the egg, containing the Blues (Jay, Jake, and Jim), and returns the brothers to their parents. Mighty Eagle approaches Red, Chuck, and Bomb, claiming that he merely appeared lazy so that they could lose faith in him and find faith in themselves, and takes credit for saving the eggs. Red discovers that the other birds have rebuilt his house in the center of the village. The pigs survive their home's destruction, and Leonard plots a new plan.

There are some changes to the original Angry Birds series in the movie, with the most infamous being the redesigns of the birds and pigs. Other changes include the birds' home being changed from Piggy Island to the new Bird Island, how Bubbles has been changed from a young child (only being able to communicate with childlike babble in books) with a knack for candy to an adult who doesn't care about confectionary, the complete reform of Silver's character, and the straight-up removal of some of the pigs, most notably King Pig, who has been replaced by his father, Leonard. Many of these changes would be applied to the games, specifically Bird Island.

The first film in the series. Red is a grumpy bird on Bird Island, an island populated by entirely happy, flightless birds who don't have any knowledge of the outside world. Red's grumpiness has made him lonely outcast, and one incident of his anger got him sentenced to Anger Management Class. The class is run by Matilda and it contains Chuck, Bomb, and Terence, all of which being characters from the original Angry Birds franchise. However, when a group of pigs led by Leonard visit Bird Island to seemingly to create an alliance with the birds, Red has great suspicions, as they destroyed his house. Red, Chuck, and Bomb team up to find out what the pigs are really up to, and they also try to get the legendary Mighty Eagle to help.

The second film in the series, it starts with the birds and pigs continuing their battles through pranks. Red became a hero along with Chuck and Bomb due to their efforts in the Battle of Pig City. However, when Leonard discovers a frosty third island led by frustrated Eagle Zeta, who wants to colonise Bird and Piggy Island and make them her own perfect vacation spots, he starts a truce with the birds to try and stop this new threat. Red initially does not trust Leonard but he is eventually persuaded to team up with the pigs. They recruit Bomb, Chuck, Mighty Eagle, and newcomer Silver, Chuck's sister. They set out to infiltrate the new Eagle Island and stop Zeta's plans.

Angry Birds follows Red (Jason Sudeikis), a barely tolerated, on the verge of being ostracized bird whose contempt for the rest of the birds on the island has led to him leading a life of perpetual loneliness. After one disastrous incident involving a birthday cake, he's sentenced to anger management classes where he meets the energetic yellow bird, Chuck (Josh Gad), and a massive black bird that suffers from spontaneous explosions, Bomb (Danny McBride).

Angry Birds never learns this and the tongue-in-cheek references that are included to remind audiences that it is a movie based on the game lose the chuckling factor they had toward the beginning. The film also feels like it's trying to emulate other animated movies instead of trying to carve its own space in the already crowded scene.

So basically, Red walks home from his anger management session and has some reflections on life along the way. In this movie, the birds live in ignorant bliss while Red is a pessimist who sees the world for what it really is rather than sunshine and rainbows. It's very relatable to me. I find that the hardest thing about being an intelligent person is that it feels like those around us are rather unintelligent.

JC You know the challenge for us is really actually the fun opportunity because in the first Angry Birds we were focused on bringing the game to life and and telling that kind of weird story about birds and pigs, and pigs stealing birds eggs, and all of that. Then the the very cool thing that we were able to do with Angry Birds 2 is take the story into a totally new direction and really tell an original story. And so it was a challenge but also really fun to do.

Not that Angry Birds is a complete loss. The animation is pretty good particularly with the texturing on the feathers. It looked lush and they capture the fast movement of the birds very well. I also was fine with all the voice talent although the celebrity aspect of it did nothing for me. There were a few good jokes and kids will probably have an ok time. This is not Norm of the North bad by any means.

Mighty Eagle does turn out to be real; however, he also turns out to not be the answer. When Red and his friends find the giant bird, they come to find he is nowhere near the all powerful deity they learned about in school. He is washed up, lazy, and expresses no interest in assisting the birds in their fight against the pigs. Perhaps, then, Mighty Eagle truly was just a concept, a desperate idea to cling to when reality becomes too frightening.

He dashes back to town, too late to keep the eggs on the island, but early enough to gather his fellow birds and take immediate action. Mighty Eagle is completely rejected, and not seen again until roughly the last 20 minutes of the film. All power is placed in Red and the birds, they use it to forcefully take back what is theirs from a hostile enemy, and achieve their just deserts.

As Angry Birds is developing into a franchise, these themes I detected are unfortunately more or less abandoned. The second film opts for a union of pigs and birds, not ignoring the past terrorism, but still ultimately nixing its importance.
