Scott Kunkel

[skɑt ˈkʌŋ.kᵊl]

I am a PhD student in Linguistics at Queen Mary University of London. I am supervised by Adam Chong, Esther de Leeuw, and Leigh Oakes.

My main research interests lie in sociophonetics, psycholinguistics, speech perception, experimental sociolinguistics, and language change (both individual and community-based). I am particularly interested in how listeners perceive speech across dialects of their native language.

My PhD research explores how individuals' native linguistic systems change after moving to an area where another dialect of their native language is spoken. In particular, I am interested in whether such mobile individuals' speech perception abilities change after long-term exposure to a new dialect and what extra-linguistic factors may influence the extent to which such changes occurs. My research focuses on French speakers with cross-dialectal exposure to Quebec French and the French of continental France.

I am funded by the UK Research and Innovation ESRC LISS-DTP studentship (https://liss-dtp.ac.uk/).
