What's Happening in the World of Conservation?
As part of a partnership with the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) and Forestry and Land Scotland, the Scottish Wildlife Trust released the first wild beavers in Scotland in almost 400 years in May 2009. One of the largest field trials of its kind in Europe, the Scottish Beaver Trial aimed to help the Scottish Government make informed decisions about the future of the species in Scotland.
NatureScot conducted an independent scientific monitoring program to determine how well and what effect the trial population had on the surrounding environment. The Scottish Government was presented with a comprehensive report, Beavers in Scotland, based on this evidence.

At the Scottish Wildlife Trust's Loch of the Lowes Wildlife Reserve in Perthshire, one of two young osprey chicks has successfully fledged from its nest.
On Wednesday 13 July at 10:06 am, the eldest chick, ringed LP8, completed its first flight around the reserve, soaring high around 'The Point' of the Loch before returning to the nest. Soon, its sibling, ringed LR0, will follow suit.
"After so many weeks of protecting their nest, it is exciting to see the first chick take flight," said Sara Rasmussen, Perthshire Ranger, Scottish Wildlife Trust. "This is a fantastic moment for over 60 local volunteers who have supported our Osprey Protection Programme, ensuring the birds are kept safe from human disturbances."
