Scotland Coast to Coast
North to South
North to South
This route is as yet un-proven. It is not a route for the enthusiastic weekend hiker who wants a month's walking holiday in the Highlands, it is a much more serious proposition than that! A proportion of the route crosses land with no paths marked or perceptible on the ground. These sections link with existing paths and trails to make up a route which is as short as reasonably possible. GPX tracks give a distance over the ground of 400 miles for the proposed route. However, experience shows that you can add about 20% to that figure as walked on the ground.
It is expected that the route will evolve over time as hikers prove, or disprove, sections of the walk and upload their tracks to the site,
The route as devised starts in Durness and ends in Kirkcudbright. Both places were chosen because they have shops, accommodation and pubs.
The original intention of the route had been to follow what is almost the longest straight line that can be drawn across Scotland without crossing tidal waters (see note on map), but unfortunately, both ends of the line ended on M.O.D. properties! You could still complete these sections of the route at Cape Wrath and Abbey Burn respectively, if and when they are open.
Rules:
Stick as close to the straight line bearing as possible. Where possible avoid roads. Minimise stretches of A and B roads. Rivers to be crossed by bridges. No crossing lochs, lakes, ponds or pools. No crossing of tidal waters (see notes).
