Mystery Malt Series 5 from Thompson Bros consists of 38 whiskies, ranging in age from 5 to 27 years. They are all single malt Scotch whiskies, bottled at 46.3%, but you won't know which whisky you've got until you take the bottle home and break the foil seal, and lift the cap. You might end up with a Dornoch 5 Year (0.63% chance), a Miltonduff 17 Year (2.23%), a Glen Garioch 27 Year (1.91%), or one of 35 other options. The full list of potential whiskies can be viewed in the tasting note below!
Remember the excitement of opening a pack of hockey cards, or Pokémon cards for you Millennials!? Think of is the adult version of that... but you can drink the contents, and unlike the stale gum, it won't cut the roof of your mouth. We love the concept here, no matter what you get, you'll end up with something cool.
Thompson Bros uses an algorithm to make sure each sealed case is roughly equal, with a comparable mix of six different whiskies. So if you purchase a full sealed case, all six whiskies will be different, a perfect canned range for a club or group tasting.
This small batch bottling of Glenlossie from Berry Bros. & Rudd was matured 10 years in Hogsheads before bottling at 46%. Exclusive to KWM, Glenlossie is a distillery that we sadly just don't see enough of!
"This Whisky Trail range has been inspired by Scotland’s 2003 Land Reform Act: Freedom to Roam. This Act gives everyone the right to access the countryside for recreational and educational purposes. There are 28 single cask bottlings that are a part of this range, and highlight the scenes found while exploring Scotland’s awe-inspiring landscape. Only whiskies that demonstrate the most exceptional characteristics are bottled as part of the Whisky Trail range - each cask as unique as a fingerprint, no two expressions will ever be the same. To ensure each whisky maintains its full flavour and cask character, we never chill-filter or add colour."
Ardnahoe Bholsa has been matured predominantly in Oloroso sherry casks, and is bottled with no artificial colouring and no chill-filtration.
Red fruits, walnuts, orange zest and peat smoke on the nose. Raisins, dates and ripe plums on the palate underpinned by Islay peat lead into a long, peppery finish.
Every now and again, a modern sherry cask just lands exactly where you want it, and this is one of those. A single 1st fill sherry hogshead of Glenlivet 2006, aged for 19 years and bottled with a small, deliberate reduction to our much-loved 57.1%. It’s Glenlivet in full, confident stride, rich, composed and unapologetically sherried, but still letting the distillate keep its footing. It opens deep and plush, figs, prunes, sultanas and strawberry jam, with a background hum of old cigar boxes, cedar and polished wood. The palate gets darker and more textural, mulchy, waxy, packed with tobacco, milk chocolate and dense fruit, with just a flicker of sea salt and mocha to keep things lively. It carries on long and assured, with spices building alongside preserved fruits, walnut oil and a touch of rancio creeping in. Proper, modern sherry cask whisky, done the right way.
This Masterpiece bottling from Master of Malt, is a 1990 vintage unnamed Islay single malt, finished in an Oloroso Sherry Octave before bottling at 31 years and 47.4%.
