Scorpions are magical creatures. Putting their symbolism aside, it is enough to take a look at their habits and properties to feel sheer awe and amazement. I was encouraged by James Hillman, author of Animal Presences, to look at the real creature before I proceed to petrify it into its symbolic meaning. Hillman does not write about scorpions, unfortunately, because I would really welcome his brilliant insights. In my research, I have managed to come across some amazing facts about scorpions. Scorpions are very ancient creatures. The oldest fossil scorpion is 400 million years old and looks exactly like the modern one. Scorpions once existed along with dinosaurs. The ancestors of our scorpions once dominated the oceans and they could reach the length of eight meters (9 feet). The modern scorpion is extremely adept at survival: some species can live a year without food or water, and survive a few weeks under water. When food is scarce, they hibernate but become fully alert and ready to attack the moment they detect their prey. What is more, their detection skills are unsurpassed: they sweep the area like radar and can feel the tiniest flutter of butterfly wings. They are not fussy eaters: they would eat anything that falls into their clutches, including other Scorpions, which they kill instantaneously by injecting venom into their nervous system.

Johfra chose to remain with the old ruler and hence the red Martian colour dominating the painting. To me, that red looks a lot like blood, which immediately calls to mind the motifs of passion, power, and also sacrifice. The scorpionic inferno is the inferno of passions. Blood is life itself, its unceasing rhythm, being in its totality, the vibrant flow of life. One is immediately reminded of rubedo (reddening), which is the last stage of the alchemical opus and which denotes the existence that is both spiritual and material. The final stage of the alchemical opus brings a reconciliation of up-, down-, in- and out- turning impulses that so often tear Scorpios apart.

We can just say that the snake is symbolic of energy itself, which can be both creative and destructive. The snake embodies the wisdom of the deeps and is a guardian of deep mysteries. It also relates to the shadow archetype signifying the temptations of matter, the material lust, the lust for power, the lowest instincts and desires, and as such is related to the dragon.

Wow, I almost had forgotten that had not written about Scorpio yet. You did my sign justice Monika and clearly you understand its mystery and depth. I really enjoyed your section on alchemy, I see a strong link between Alchemy and Scorpio, particularly Pluto. This fits in so well with my Cosmic Retrograde Challenge that invites one to experiment with alchemy by combining the old with the present to create something different and new.

Thank you, Debra. There have always been a lot of Scorpionic people in my life, I tend to attract them for better and worse. I think with your Sun in Leo you must be the eagle variety! They are rare of course.

The story behind the name: Scorpius is one of the 12 constellations included in the Zodiac. Considered to be among the oldest constellations recognized by human civilizations, these 12 patterns were of particular significance to ancient cultures like the Babylonians because, as the Babylonian astronomers noticed, they mark the path through which our Sun, moon and planets appear to travel through the course of a year. The stars of Scorpius trace out the spine of the Scorpion (or of a dragon, according to Chinese legend), making it perhaps the most faithfully rendered constellation in the sky.

Scorpius rears his head (or, more accurately, his tail) in a number of different legends, the most popular of which involves the great hunter Orion. It is said that Orion, the gigantic son of Poseidon and Eurayle, claimed he could kill all of the wild animals of the world if he so desired. The goddess Gaia, protector of Earth and all its creatures, became alarmed by Orion's boast. Fearing he might one day act on it, she sent a scorpion to kill Orion. The rest of the legend then splits into various story lines. In one, the oversized Scorpion managed to sting Orion on the heel (marked by the blue star Rigel), after a great battle. Gaia then took pity on Orion and placed him in the sky as a constellation, setting the Scorpion at the opposite end of the heavens so that they could never battle again. Scorpius rises just as Orion sets, and in this, some see Orion forever fleeing its fatal sting. In another, the Scorpion was sent to kill Orion and, due to its small size and great stealth, managed to sting him quickly and kill him. In both of these stories, it is said that the great healer Asclepius ground the scorpion under his foot and then brought Orion back to life using herbal healing methods he had learned from observing a snake revive its brother. Hades, the god of the underworld, alarmed by Asclepius's ability to raise the dead, persuaded his brother Zeus to kill Asclepius. After doing so however, Zeus, regretting his decision, gave Asclepius the name Ophiuchus, or "serpent bearer", and placed him in the Serpens constellation, in recognition of his contributions to healing and medicine. The Scorpius constellation is located directly beneath Ophiuchus and the Serpens in the sky, just as the scorpion was killed beneath Asclepius's foot.

A variant story line has Orion fighting a great battle with the Scorpion and escaping into the raging sea. Orion had been given the gift of wading through oceans as if they were shallow ponds, and thus he strode away from the Scorpion who could not follow. Unfortunately for Orion, this gave the god Apollo, who was unhappy that his sister Artemis had fallen in love with Orion, the chance he had been waiting for. Apollo saw Orion enter the sea from a great distance and, calling to his sister, taunted her by saying she could not hit the distant black speck with one of her arrows. She quickly unsheathed her bow and hit her target, not realizing it was the head of Orion. In her sorrow, she placed him in the sky as a constellation.

Hopefully, some real professionals exists, and they are with Paragon. Their answer was quite simple and fast : the 500GB Toshiba disk has a 512 sector emulation, because if not windows 7 cannot even boot !

I have been deceived by WD in buying this WD scorpio blue 1000G disk, as they never told that it was a 4k sector native disk and that it is not compatible with all existing windows already on the market.

The moir scorpion is a pattern designed to simulate the movement of a scorpion. As the lines of the parallel grid move across the scorpion pattern, an alternating series of images appears to resemble the movement.

In the wake of much recent Project Scorpio information, the first images of the device's development kit have emerged. As it's a dev kit, this shouldn't be taken as an indication of how the final product will look. Take a look at one image below, or take a look at the full gallery over at Gamasutra.

Microsoft's Project Scorpio console has been heavily advertised as being capable of powering out native 4K resolution, and given what a sticking point that has been for the company in selling people on the machine, it's surprising there haven't been more examples of the device in action. That's finally changed, as Microsoft recently hosted a private event where the technology giant demonstrated Project Scorpio's 4K enhancements, providing several different examples that showed what a dramatic upgrade Project Scorpio's visuals are over the 1080p Xbox One.

The images, provided by Windows Central and taken of the various demonstrations run by Microsoft at the private event, show a scientist women in a steampunk laboratory and a painstakingly detailed yellow ladybug. Both are meant to demonstrate why Microsoft is so proud of Project Scorpio's technical specs, which have been heavily vaunted despite consisting of a lot of technical jargon that has been lost on gamers. Essentially, though: these images are meant to sell gamers on those sweet, sweet teraflops of GPU power nestled in Project Scorpio.

It's plain to see why Microsoft is excited about Project Scorpio's development, though. The differences in quality, sharpness, and and detail - particularly in the woman's hair and face - are very clear, and hint at the possibility that developers will have a number of enticing tools to mess around with on Project Scorpio once the console is finally available. The above image demonstrates, in order from left-to-right, the resolution of the Xbox One, the Scorpio at 4K on a HD display, and the Scorpio at 4K native. Below, there are images of a yellow ladybug using Project Scorpio's 4K on the left, while demonstrating Scorpio's 4K with enhancements on the right.

Unfortunately, the pictures only represent tech demos, and aren't indicative of what's currently being developed in-house by Microsoft or by any other developers who have been given access to Project Scorpio. The technical prowess of the machine certainly makes the console feel like a premium machine, but with rumors suggesting that Project Scorpio's price will actually be lower than anticipated, the system could be the home run Microsoft needs to re-assert itself as the dominant force in console gaming. 152ee80cbc
