Side Quests (Should Do) (Bonus Activities)
Side Quests (Should Do) (Bonus Activities)
Side Quests are challenges you should do over the course of your time studying, they are completely optional. They will help you grow in your subject area, introduce you to resources that are helpful for studying on your own, and set a pace for you to move beyond what is expected for you at this grade level. Each "side quest" you complete earns you a set number of coins. (See the page discussing "The Market" in your guidebook.)
Side Quest #1: Van Gogh Mini-Podcast
You are tasked with delving into the study of a famous painter, a master of his craft known for his unique style. This artist painted with passion and emotion, using bold brushstrokes and vibrant colors to create scenes both ordinary and fantastical. His paintings of starry nights swirl with energy, as if the very heavens are alive with music. And his sunflowers, radiant and alive, seem as though they could start dancing any minute. Studying his works, you can feel the magic pulsing from the canvas, the raw power of the artist's vision. You can't help but be inspired by his artistry, his ability to see the beauty in the everyday and paint it in a way that makes the world feel enchanted.
Practice: You will be recording a mini podcast lesson about the life and work of artist Vincent Van Gogh. Start by writing a script out on paper, you can talk about important events in his life story, his family, problems he dealt with, etc. Be sure to include some discussion of some of his famous artwork. Your presentation will need to be over 3+ minutes in length. You'll need to turn your script, and your 3+ minute recording in as well as a guidebook page at the end. You can use your phone, PC, or other device for the recording, just be sure you can share over email or Google Drive.
You can start your research of his life/work by beginning with these video links. Remember not copy directly from them for your script, but you can use them to research.

Show Mastery: You turn in a script with accurate information, you turn in a recording that meets 3+ minute requirement.
What If I Don't Achieve Mastery?: If you don't meet the requirements, you'll be asked to continue until you complete it as described.
Side Quest #2: Practice Your Path
All students at the Academy must challenge themselves and each other when training in the class they choose to explore. In this side quest you are tasked with coming up with a quiz challenging other magicians, beastmasters, knights, rangers, and bards in the knowledge they must know to progress in their path.
Practice: NOTE: You can only work on this side quest during after-school practice on Thursdays.
Your teacher will give you a set of questions from a previous competition. You will use this set of questions to create a test on Quizizz following the guidelines set forth by your teacher.
Show Mastery: Turn-in your Quizizz featuring real questions to your teacher/coach. They will check to make sure you meet the number of questions required and that the formatting is correct.
What If I Don't Achieve Mastery?: If you don't meet the requirements, you'll be asked to continue until you complete it as described.
Side Quest #3: Master Musicians Melody
Throughout the history of the Academy and the lands that span this world, there have been many famous musicians and bards. Every Bard at the Academy studies their work, and seeks to learn the skills these powerful musicians employed in their performances.
For this side quest, you will be creating a song to honor their work, both to celebrate their successes and to learn more about how each of these famous musicians lived.
Practice: Watch the video posted for inspiration. Handel VS Mozart Rap Battle Compose a song, (in whatever genre you want,) that discusses the history of a real-world musician, their life, their work, etc. It can be funny, serious, or somewhere in between, as long as it is factual! You do not have to sing this song, but you should pick instrumental background music for it be sung over. Write your song on a Google Doc, link the background music, and structure it so that it would be at least a few minutes in length.
Show Mastery: Send your Google Doc to your teacher/coach. They will evaluate to see if it meets the requirements, (hint: make sure it has lots of information about the musician, and that if sung it would last multiple minutes in length.)
What If I Don't Achieve Mastery?: If you don't meet the requirements, you'll be asked to add to your work until it meets the stated goals.
