MEET YOUR COACHES
Skylar Johnson
Head Boys Tennis Coach
Coach Johnson brings with him 14 years of high school tennis coaching experience. In 2012 he joined the boys and girls coaching staff at Grand County High School, helping lead the Red Devils boys to 2014 State Runner-Up finish and a doubles state championship. He was named Head Tennis Coach for the boys and girls tennis programs in 2015 and served as the head coach until 2020. In 2020 Coach Johnson moved to Richland, Washington, taking over as Head Coach for the Boys and Girls tennis programs. While at Richland High School coaching the Bombers, they won 4 Eastern Washington Division Titles, Champions of the Inland Empire Tournament (Largest tournament in the country), 2x doubles state runner-ups, 2x singles 3rd place finishes and had top 5 state team finishes in each of his seasons as Head Coach, going toe-to-toe with juggernaut tennis programs in Western Washington. Coach Johnson was honored as the Eastern Washington High School Tennis Coach of the year in 2022 (Girls) and 2023 (Boys). His proudest accomplishment while leading the Bombers was creating the largest no-cut program in the state with over 50 boys and 60 girls playing on his teams each year. Coach Johnson lives by the philosophy that "Tennis is for EVERYONE".
Coach Johnson was a multi-sport athlete in high school playing football, basketball and of course tennis. He is still an avid tennis player, with reaching a UTR ranking of 7.2 in 2020.
When not coaching Coach Johnson enjoys spending time with his family, fishing in Alaska, playing tennis, pickleball, cooking and teaching math.
Forrest VanWest
Assistant Boys Tennis Coach
Coach VanWest brings with him 37 years of tennis playing experience. Coach VanWest was a multi-sport athlete in high school playing tennis, and club soccer . Coach VanWest played on his high school tennis team (Pine View High School) all three years, playing #1 singles. After high school, Coach VanWest served in the United States Air Force for six years. In those six years while in England and Guam, Coach VanWest taught tennis to other airmen, played several tournaments, and earned club championships with two different tennis clubs. After the Air Force, Coach VanWest became a police officer in Utah and his current assignment is the SRO at Snow Canyon Middle School. For the last 19 years, Coach VanWest has won several UTR and USTA tournaments in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles in Utah and Nevada. Coach VanWest is still an ardent tennis player, with an all time high USTA ranking of 4.5 in 2006 6.4 singles UTR in 2025, and 6.0 doubles UTR in 2024. Coach VanWest just won the “growing the game” award in 2025 from the United States Tennis Association. Coach VanWest has also been a little league baseball coach for four years. If you’ve met Coach VanWest, you will know he has a positive attitude, zest for life, is a competitor, and is team-oriented.
Coach VanWest loves spending time with his family, mountain biking, working out, playing tennis, golf, board games, and reading. Coach VanWest’s favorite drink is a zero calorie “Capt’n Jack Sparrow” from Fiiz.
Karsten Rhea
Assistant Boys Tennis Coach
Coach Rhea brings with him a wealth of experience having played tennis at the state and collegiate level. He has been working as a tennis coach for 3 years and currently works for St. George City as a tennis instructor.
Coach Rhea just moved back to St. George from back east and is studying Exercise Science at Utah Tech.
