The Origins of Magma
Assessment:
Draw a schematic of a cross-section of the earth, showing the different layers of the earth.
Include and label (when necessary) the following parts of the illustration:
1. Different tectonic settings where magma is generated
2. The type of melting that is usually associated with the settings identified in # 1
3. Heat transfer mechanisms and the direction of heat transfer (through arrows)
Further research — Below the drawing, note the different zones where magma is formed and cite one known location of each.

Rubric:
1. Overall appearance - neatness, color, and attractiveness ( 15 %)
2. Model/Drawing - drawing shows all sections of the earth and other information needed together with its label. The drawing shows the different zones and locations. (25%)
3. Creativity - Drawing shows that the students used his/her creativity in doing his/her cross-section. The drawing is clear and easy to understand. (10 %)
