The Science Olympiad is a competitive, team-based program. Teams of up to 15 students from each school compete in various scientific disciplines, including study, lab, hybrid, and build events. These events test theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and engineering abilities. The program encourages students to deepen their interest and skills in STEM fields. At Mark Twain, Science Olympiad is coached by Mr. Loren Scott and Dr. Nupur Kumar and is open to students in all grades.
Middle schoolers participate in the Science Olympiad because it enhances their knowledge and skills in various scientific disciplines. It fosters critical thinking, teamwork, and communication, inspiring a passion for STEM. The competition boosts self-confidence, prepares students for future academic challenges, and makes learning science fun and engaging. Many students find the Olympiad to be a transformative experience that sparks long-term interest in scientific careers. Participating in the Science Olympiad can expose students to new areas of science and technology they might not encounter in their regular curriculum. Moreover, the event creates a sense of community and camaraderie among participants, fostering lifelong friendships and collaborative skills.
