Elementary Grades

Each child will need a different amount of supervision, different balance of on-screen and off-screen time, different guidance in keeping a daily journal. Kindergarteners and 5th graders in general need very different levels of support in home-based learning, but the best resources for them are pretty much the same. You can find some possible ideas for weekly schedules for different ages levels here.

Getting Organized

  • Create a schedule at the beginning of each day.

      • Include time for: eating, physical activity, reading, cleaning and other chores, computer-free time, mindfulness time, and going outdoors

  • Check the fridge and pantry and plan your morning snack, lunch, and afternoon snack

  • Keep a hand-written and drawn journal to remember and share your learning each day


The Basics

Decide on methods to keep up your basic math, punctuation/grammar, world language (if applicable) skills with well-known tools like


Broad Range of Subjects

  • Explore options for live virtual learning events, and schedule around those if desired!

      • One teacher's daily newsletter of live virtual learning events for that day

      • Take an Outschool live video classes (some free, some $)

  • Do 2 Digital Breakouts in your grade range

  • Play games at PBSKids

  • Play games at ABCYa

  • Check out eBooks, digital audiobooks, digital graphic novels, and other resources from your local public library

      • For example, Seattle Public Library has extensive online eBook resources, including my family's favorite: Hoopla digital comics app

  • Do a backyard or neighborhood scavenger hunt. Examples: Nature Shapes or Literacy Scavenger Hunt.

  • Go Geocaching with an adult (bring hand sanitizer and a disinfecting wipe)
