# Terms and Conditions

These Terms and Conditions ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the ScholarScan mobile application ("ScholarScan" or the "App"). By downloading, installing, or using the App, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree to these Terms, please do not use the App.
## 1. Use of the App
ScholarScan provides educational productivity tools including offline Optical Character Recognition (OCR), document management (PDF & DOCX merging, exporting), local text translation, integration with the arXiv academic repository, and optional AI-powered features via OpenRouter.
You agree to use the App only for lawful purposes and in a manner consistent with any applicable local, state, national, or international law and regulation. You must not use the App for any illegal or unauthorized activities.
## 2. arXiv Integration
ScholarScan utilizes the public arXiv API to allow users to search and download scientific papers.
- You agree to comply with arXiv's usage policies when accessing their repository through the App.
- ScholarScan is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by arXiv or Cornell University.
- The availability and accuracy of the content sourced from arXiv are subject to arXiv's own terms and uptime. The developers of ScholarScan are not responsible or liable for any content or data retrieved via the arXiv API.
## 3. OpenRouter AI Integration
ScholarScan integrates with **OpenRouter** to provide optional AI-powered features such as paper summarization, explanation, and question-answering.
- **Text transmission:** When you use AI features, the text you explicitly submit is sent to OpenRouter's servers for processing. You are responsible for ensuring you have the right to share any content you submit.
- **No guarantee of accuracy:** AI-generated responses are provided for informational and educational purposes only. They may be incomplete, incorrect, or outdated. You should not rely on AI responses as a substitute for professional academic, legal, or medical advice.
- **Third-party providers:** OpenRouter may route your requests to underlying AI model providers (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic, Google). Your use of AI features is also subject to the applicable policies of those providers.
- **Acceptable use:** You agree not to use AI features to generate harmful, misleading, defamatory, or illegal content. Academic integrity remains your responsibility — AI-generated text must not be submitted as your own original work in violation of your institution's policies.
- ScholarScan is not affiliated with or endorsed by OpenRouter or any underlying AI model provider.
## 4. Subscriptions and In-App Purchases (ScholarScan Pro)
ScholarScan offers an optional premium upgrade called "ScholarScan Pro", which removes advertisements and unlocks a distraction-free environment.
- Payments for ScholarScan Pro are processed entirely through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
- Your payment will be charged to your Apple ID or Google account at confirmation of purchase.
- If ScholarScan Pro is offered as an ongoing subscription, it will automatically renew unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. You can manage and cancel your subscriptions by going to your account settings completely independently of the App.
- We do not issue refunds for in-app purchases directly; please refer to Apple or Google's refund policies.
## 5. Intellectual Property
The App itself, including its original content, features, user interface, and functionality, are owned by the developers of ScholarScan and are protected by international copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret, and other intellectual property or proprietary rights laws.
You may not copy, modify, distribute, sell, or lease any part of our App without explicit permission.
Documents, PDFs, and data that you scan, merge, or import into the App remain solely your property. ScholarScan claims no ownership over your personal documents.
## 6. Disclaimer of Warranties
The App is provided on an "AS IS" and "AS AVAILABLE" basis. We make no warranties, expressed or implied, regarding the operation of the App or the accuracy, completeness, or reliability of the OCR text extraction, translations, or arXiv search results.
Your use of the App is entirely at your own risk.
## 7. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, in no event shall the developers of ScholarScan be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including without limitation: loss of profits, data, use, goodwill, or other intangible losses, resulting from (i) your access to or use of or inability to access or use the App; (ii) any conduct or content of any third party on the App; or (iii) unauthorized access, use, or alteration of your transmissions or content.
## 8. Changes to Terms
We reserve the right to modify or replace these Terms at any time. If a revision is material, we will provide reasonable notice prior to any new terms taking effect. By continuing to access or use our App after those revisions become effective, you agree to be bound by the revised terms.
