The Garner ancestors and relatives of Rebecca Garner (1807-1871) lived in America during the 1600’s to the 1800’s, and in England during the 1300’s to the 1600’s.  Their history includes Englishmen who had a coat of arms that included three black “griffins heads”, a father and son who sailed to America, soldiers in the American Revolution, plantation owners in the Southern States, and Mormon converts and pioneers.

     A “Burgess” (or community official) of Shrewsbury.     

Richard Garner, b.1606, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England; married Katharn; 2 children.

     Supposedly traveled from England to Virginia by 1637.

     Caution:  No original document has been found that directly links this Richard Garner of Shropshire to the Richard Garner who settled in Virginia. 

John Garner, b.1634, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England; married Susanna Keene; 10 children.

     Supposedly traveled with his father from England to Virginia by 1637.

     Caution:  No original document has been found that directly links this John Garner of Shropshire to the John Garner who settled in Virginia. 

Thomas Garner, b.1667, Virginia; married Mary Bushnell in 1701; 7 children.

     Lived and farmed in Northumberland and Stafford counties, Virginia.

James Garner, b.1720, Virginia; married Elizabeth Freeman in 1748; 6 children.

     Farmed in Virginia and North Carolina; 6’6” tall; “a man of powerful physique”; had slaves.

John Fushee Garner, b.1749, Virginia; married Nancy Whittle in 1770; 8 children.

     Soldier in the American Revolution; settled and farmed in Tennessee; had slaves.

James Garner, b.1772, North Carolina; married Mary Moon in 1794; 14 children.

     Moved from North Carolina to Tennessee and later to Ohio; freed slaves.

Rebecca Garner, b.1807, Tennessee; married Samuel Clark in 1827 in Ohio; 13 children.

     A Quaker who joined the LDS Church and traveled to Utah in 1848.
