Alike other regions of the world, the switch towards more renewable energy and away from polluting sources has been a complicated journey for the state of Georgia.
In recent years, Georgia has made progress towards renewable energy sources, especially evident in Georgia Power's effort toward solar energy. From the Georgia Power website, "Sunlight is one of Georgia’s most abundant resources with an average of 218 sunny days per year", which explains its relevance. In a similar effort, Georgia Power, with the assistance of government officials, released a statement in 2022 claiming that they had "plans to shutter 12 coal units, totaling about 3,500 megawatts, by 2028."
However, these commitments appear short-lived. In more recent news, Georgia Power has chosen to continue high coal plant usage in response to the mass growth of datacenters over the past year. Additionally, despite their continued casual commitment to renewable energy sources, they have released an updated statement that two of their largest coal plants will stay fully operational until at least 2035, far beyond the initial timeline.
So, the question remains: How can we change this for the better?
