Abstract: Online learning has been under greater scrutiny by accrediting agencies over the past several years. During a review of Scottsdale Community College’s (SCC) online programs by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) in the spring of 2017, it was found that SCC needed improvement in three areas in order to achieve online program accreditation. These three areas were:
Develop and apply standards for training faculty members delivering online courses;
Develop student-centered standardization of courses to make it easier for students to navigate, and;
Develop an institutional program or system to ensure consistency between online courses and programs across departments and disciplines.
In this session, we will share with you the path we took to achieving success in accreditation for online programs, the culture changes that resulted across all populations - from students to faculty/staff to leadership, as well as the significant impact that occurred on learner outcomes in online courses.

Abstract: This session will focus on a faculty professional development course created as a result of a Higher Learning Commission (HLC) review of online programs at Scottsdale Community College (SCC). We responded to HLC with a series of faculty training courses. In this session, we will discuss only one part of that series, Online Teaching Essentials (OTE).
OTE is designed to provide faculty with practical information and best practices for teaching online. The course stresses universal design practices while ensuring their courses meet accessibility standards. The principles covered in this course are designed for fully online courses. Due to COVID-19, we’ve broadened our audience to include Live Online courses, which are the current modality of in-person and hybrid courses.
