As per the World Health Organization (WHO) Female Genital Cutting (FGC) encompasses all procedures that involve the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. It is an extreme form of violence and discrimination against women, girls and non-binary individuals. It has severe physical, mental and emotional repercussions and is a form of child abuse.Join Scarlet Udaan’s #EndFGC campaign and use our toolkit to raise your voice against FGC! As you are reading this post, somewhere in the world, a girl is undergoing FGC. An estimated 200 million girls alive today have undergone FGC and a further 3 million are at risk of undergoing the procedure every year. FGC is a form of gender based violence and denies girls, women and non-binary individuals their right to freedom, bodily integrity, and equality. FGC is carried out due to a desire for social acceptance and is based in deeply entrenched social norms that seek to control female sexuality.
