Dancing with my Mother

Dancing with my Mother poetically explores the relationship between a woman and dancing from childhood to adulthood.  

This documentary holds a personal story I have wanted to honour through the medium of film for a long time. Dancing with my Mother is a poetic documentation of the life of my mother, Claudine Short through her experiences with dance from a young age. Claudine has been a dancer for many years, the way her life has gone, the opportunity to dance professionally never materialised. Today, Claudine is a student studying dance in college, a wonderful mother to four daughters, a wife to a loving husband, and father, as well as a pilates teacher. As this story is incredibly personal to Claudine, and myself, as her daughter I took on this project independently by both creating the film and producing it. Dancing with my Mother is a film created by me, for and with, my Mother. 

My creative direction throughout the making of this documentary leaked into the various roles I had, as director overseeing the production in its various stages and steering it towards an engineered outcome through the visual and audio elements of the film. Editing was by far the most enjoyable process. Creating the finished film and perfecting each detail in this post-production stage was an intimate task that allowed me to get underneath the surface of the film and understand how each element is moulded together in order to create a complete a documentary.
