A coed hockey team open to all Scarborough hockey players in grades 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade. All skill levels are welcome. We compete in the Southern Maine Middle School Hockey league (SMMSHL) and play against other local town teams on Sunday nights. We offer 2 coed teams: A team (6th, 7th, 8th) and a B team (5th, 6th, 7th).
No. Players must live in Scarborough to compete on the team, but can attend another local middle school. Some 5th grade players from other towns may reach out to participate only if their town does not have enough players for their own B team.
No, but Scarborough girls may play on one of our coed teams. For a girls only option players can reach out to other towns to play on their girls only team. Our high school girls co-op with Falmouth, so that is the usual choice, but Portland, Yarmouth and Biddeford have teams.
Evaluations will be held in early October to determine player skill levels. Coaches will meet to place players on appropriate teams. 5th graders MUST play on the B team, and 8th graders MUST play on the A team.
Otherwise players with higher skill level will play on the A team. Depending on numbers a few swing players may be used and play for both teams as needed.
Scarborough does NOT have practices. Players are typically busy with club team practices and games.
League games are on Sunday nights from early November to early March with playoffs beginning in March. Game start times range from 3:30PM to 7:30PM. There will be approximately 12 regular season games.
Games may be played at the following rinks: Family Ice Center, USM, Harold Alfond Forum (UNE), Casco Bay Arena, Sidney J. Watson (Bowdoin), Norway Savings Bank Arena, and Troubh.
Playoffs will begin in March with 1 game each Sunday through March. It is single elimination with a chance to compete for the Mariners Cup.
We end the season with a celebratory banquet (Coach overview, team gift, slideshow and cupcakes) end of March or early April.
Scarborough High School Ice Hockey usually offers 4 practice/skills sessions for our middle school players in June/July (additional cost applies: $50).
The cost changes season to season based on number of players. It is typically between $200-$250 per player. We do offer a sibling discount. Jerseys and socks are provided. Players may keep the socks, but jerseys are returned at the end of the season.
At this time Scarborough MS Hockey does not do fundraising. But open to suggestions if families would like to take that on.
The board will send out a survey (Google Form) in early August to gauge interest. The SMMSHL will send out a registration link in late September. All players must be registered with the league 2 weeks before the first game (early November).
We understand that players will have club games, practices and other obligations. We ask that players RSVP week to week, so coaches can make game plans.
In order to compete in league playoffs (March) players MUST attend a minimum of 6 of the 12 regular season league games.
Those interested in coaching should email the board or fill out the google form when registering their player. All coaches MUST have the following complete BEFORE allowed on the bench:
