The Scottish AI in Tertiary Education Network (SCAITEN) comprises representation from all Scottish HEIs and many colleges where members have an institutional role in leading on Generative AI. It has been working in collaboration across the tertiary sector in sharing practice, conducting funded research, and liaising with organisations such as JISC, the Association for Learning Technology, the College Development Network, Universities Scotland and the short life working group on "generative AI in assessment and the curriculum" (commissioned by Universities Scotland Learning and Teaching Committee).
We are committed to open education, collaboration and education for the common good. All our resources are available under Creative Commons licences for reuse and adaptation.
The remit of the Scottish AI in Tertiary Education Network is to:
Promote and support an enhancement-led approach to AI in Tertiary Education.
Share practice on current and future approaches to AI in Tertiary Education to enhance practice across the sector.
Facilitate collaboration on ideas and challenges on the use or non-use of AI in Tertiary Education and identification of enhancement-led solutions and opportunities.
Enable sector-wide connection with governmental, regulatory and other bodies or organisations relevant to AI in Tertiary Education.
Undertake and / or commission research on AI which will enhance or support the tertiary education sector to make informed, equitable and effective use of AI.
SCAITEN has developed a high-level statement on use of generative AI in tertiary education, through extensive stakeholder consultation. The statement outlines an ethical, enhancement-led, and responsible approach to generative AI for the Scottish sector. It serves as a foundation for institutions to guide discussions with students and staff, and to align with new or existing institutional guidance and position statements.
For further information, current signatories and adaptations, see ScAITEN statement of principles.
Membership of ScAITEN is open to staff in the Scottish Tertiary Sector who:
