WHO ARE WE?

The AFSS (Africana Studies Society) is a newly recognized Undergraduate-led academic and outreach organization at Stony Brook University. We are dedicated to uplifting scholars of Africana studies, as well as creating community based programs that bridge connection between the local and student communities through this discipline, and work to unite us all through intellectual and personal growth!

We are committed to engaging with our peers and community to advance our discipline and promote growth for the department!! We are passionate about providing equitable opportunity for all students- Stony Brook and beyond. We will be working on and off campus to create new opportunities for students of all ages, working towards building a network of like minded students and individuals!

The Africana Studies Society’s ultimate goal is to to promote critical thinking and dialogue through activities such as student-organized lectures, reading groups, panel discussions, film analyses, workshops, research presentations etc. In doing this, we seek to not only have crucial discussions, but also to familiarize our peers with the department and push Africana Studies to the forefront of their minds. These initiatives are designed to help students connect what the department teaches through coursework as well as the lived experiences of our peers to contemporary global issues, historical case studies, and interdisciplinary perspectives.
