Causes of the Month is Student Council initiative that promote school-wide involvement. Every month, Student Council supports a cause to raise awareness and funds for local and national charities. Causes that are chosen every month can vary each year and are a way to help people in need in our own community and beyond.
This month we will be focusing on raising money for prostate and ovarian cancer awareness for the Kaleidoscope of Hope Foundation. The Kaleidoscope of Hope Foundation is a non profit organization in New Jersey dedicated to raising awareness for Ovarian Cancer for the last 18 years.
Student Council chose this foundation in order to raise awareness among the student body as well as in the community. Additionally, we are hoping to increase participation and activism amongst our students.
On September 27th, students wearing teal spun the wheel to win an assortment of prizes. This promoted awareness among our student body and encouraged activism.
On September 29th, any students and faculty who wished to attend went to Avon by the Sea to support Kaleidoscope of Hope's Walk for Prostate and Ovarian Cancer Awareness.
This month, student council focused on raising awareness in our school regarding breast cancer. Our homecoming football game was a "pink-out" in which all who attended were encouraged to wear pink apparel in support of this cause of the month. Student council collected donations for the National Breast Cancer Foundation during this game.
Every year peers and faculty decide the South Brunswick High School Homecoming Court. This year Sara Rubiano and David Garner were crowned queen and king.
Attendees of the football game wore all the pink they owned to show their support for breast cancer awareness.
Between the football players, cheerleaders, students, teachers, and parents, the stadium was packed with pink. Together we spread awareness for this cause of the month.
The Semper Fi Fund was this cause of the months foundation. Every year student council takes the month of November to raise awareness and collect donations for our troops and veterans. This year our focus was put mostly on what happens when the veterans return and how we could make their transition easier. The Semper Fi Fund devotes its time to three major programs meant to assist veterans in their transition back, healing their physical and mental wounds, and assisting with their financial needs.
Student council hosted a lunch event in which those wearing yellow/gold to support our veterans played games to win prizes.
Active duty military or veterans that were faculty at SBHS were honored through announcements and the decoration of their doors or workspace.
On November 20th students were welcome to come watch a documentary on veterans and the methods of healing for PTSD.
Student Council had a guest speaker, Specialist Keiser, who spoke of his experiences and transition to civilian life after serving our military and living with PTSD.
The month of December is filled with holiday spirit outside and inside of the Activities offiice. At the end of November, teachers began to submit their designs for how they would like their door decorated for $10. Along with this, 'Giving Trees' were up around the school, covered in paper ornaments requesting gift cards and donations for Adopt A Family. This organization works to buy toys and clothes for those in need in South Brunswick during this holiday season.
Every year, Student Council holds its annual Blacklight Dance for January's cause of the month. With raffles, dancing, food, and games the Blacklight Dance is a huge hit every year. This year Student Council will be donating the money from this dance to the state student council's charity One Simple Wish. This foundation works to grant kids in foster homes their one simple wish to make them smile.
Class Councils raise money through their sales of pizza, glow sticks, face paint, dessert, and so much more.
In between periods of dancing, attendees play games for a chance to win giftcards and prizes.
Teams are formed prior to the night of the Blacklight Dance, with the goal to be the most spirited and biggest team.
This month, Student Council took on heart disease awareness! Student Council raised money and awareness for the American Heart Association through carnation sales, shirt sales, and a lunch event for students. By wearing red in support of heart disease awareness, students played various games to earn prizes such as shirts, candy, and tattoos.
Student Council collected food from each 1A classroom in a competition. The winner at the end of the month received free t-shirts for their efforts. We were able to collect over 250 items for the South Brunswick food pantry.
Student Council collected food during our class block and after school from all the 1A classrooms.
Student Council created bulletin boards and advertisements to encourage students to bring in food for the food pantry.
This month, Student Council embraced the slogan "See the Able, Not the Label" by hosting a lunch event and decorating the school with puzzle pieces. Our goal this month was to raise awareness over money. On the day of our lunch event, students wore red, blue, and yellow in order to participate in our fun games!
