Cyprus companies for international business
Cyprus combines an English common-law tradition with membership of the European Union. This makes its legal framework familiar to many international entrepreneurs, particularly those accustomed to British business structures. However, Cyprus has its own company and tax legislation, so a Cypriot company should not be treated as identical to a UK company.
For businesses seeking an EU base, Cyprus may be worth considering for international trading, services or investment activities. The appropriate structure depends on where the business operates, where its management takes place and the circumstances of its shareholders.
Consider the running costs first
Company formation is only the beginning. You should also budget for accounting, financial reporting, tax compliance, company administration and any local management or operational arrangements required.
As a commercial guideline, we generally recommend considering a Cyprus company where expected annual turnover is at least €150,000, with a profit margin of approximately 30%. This is our initial screening guideline, not a legal requirement or a guarantee of suitability. Businesses with different figures may still benefit where there is a strong operational reason for establishing in Cyprus.
Before proceeding, we recommend comparing the full annual costs with the expected commercial benefits.
Corporate tax and dividends
From 1 January 2026, Cyprus’s standard corporate income tax rate is 15%, applied to taxable profits rather than turnover. The previous standard rate was 12.5%.
Dividends paid to non-resident shareholders generally do not attract Cyprus withholding tax, although exceptions apply, including certain payments to companies in specified jurisdictions. This does not mean the shareholder receives the dividend tax-free everywhere: taxation in their country of residence must also be considered.
The overall outcome therefore depends on more than the headline corporate tax rate. Company residence, management, shareholder residence and the applicable cross-border rules should be examined together.
Opening a business bank account
We can help you prepare for a business bank-account application and understand the provider’s requirements.
Expect to provide company and ownership documents, identification and information about the business and its funds. The bank may request further documents or a meeting. The process varies by institution and applicant, and approval remains the bank’s decision; it should not be presented as a guaranteed account opening after a few hours of interviews.
An EU base for cross-border trade
Cyprus may be considered by businesses looking to organise operations within the EU, including businesses reviewing their European arrangements following Brexit.
However, incorporating in Cyprus does not automatically determine the VAT treatment of a transaction. Cross-border sales, chain transactions and proposed triangular trading arrangements must be assessed against the actual movement of goods, the parties involved and the applicable VAT requirements. EU VAT rules apply through national legislation, and treatment can vary with the circumstances.
We can help you identify the registrations and reporting arrangements to examine before trading.
Connections beyond Europe
Cyprus’s location at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa adds to its appeal as an international business base. For businesses working with Middle Eastern customers or suppliers, it may offer a useful location from which to organise regional activities. The practical benefits should be assessed against your particular market and operating needs.
