wanted interactions: Dragon Age, other Heroes of Ferelden (she could be a follower, see her about). Other elf-friendly fandoms as long as her story doesn't have to change (various videogames, the Witcher, Lord of the Rings, BG3). She would not interact with blood mages, people who are actively against elves (she'd refuse to talk) and Loghain.
open to romantic interactions with: male humans and elves (chemistry based) and I'm easily open to ship her with Alistair or Zevran, and Cullen if we go canon divergent in DAO or we write them in DAI.
fc: Katherine McNamara
Elf mage at the time of DAO, permanently magic-less after the last battle (see below why), she mostly used fire and lightening magic plus her burning one-handed sword, which becomes her primary weapon once she loses her magic
anti-blood magic, anti Circle now & anti templars in Circles & anti-racists (against elves even if they are elves themselves) & anti most institutions if they come with a set of rules that you aren't meant to discuss, because she will want to discuss them, and this includes Gray Wardens rules too
either too passionate about her causes or 'bro, chill' with no in between
she won't be against individuals "just because" they are part of a specific category, unless the category is inherently harmful, which also means arguing that 'not all templars are bad, it's the system that needs to change' with fellow mages; not all apostates are bad either, however all blood mages in her opinion are doing something bad because blood magic falls under her 'inherently hamrful' category.
pro-heroics and friendship and love and mabaris
if she's betrayed she won't forgive it nor let it go
while she Must Joke and she can be awkward she's also a softie and Has to say that nice word and give you That hug.
First of all, since I mention it several times, I'll tell you that The Fade is another world, almost the dream-world, but with very real spirits and demons in it, and mages draw their magic from it (either you are born a mage and at some point it will manifest, or you aren't). The Circle where she grew up is a tower where mages are "kept to be safe" or more accurately imprisoned so that everyone else feels safe, whether necessary or not; more often than not they are at the whims of the templars who are watching them (if the mages appear to be dangerous, since their magic connects them to the Fade and they could be possessed by demons, they will be immediately killed.)
If the mages don't go through their initiation because afraid or not skilled enough, or if they are punished for a crime, they may be made Tranquil, as in their connection to the fade is gone, which means their magic and ability to dream is gone, and they stop having emotions besides feeling calm.
She's also an elf living in a country where they are second-class citizens at best, was rescued from becoming a Tranquil by a Grey Warden, she accidentally becomes the new leader (because one of the very few survivors of a disastrous battle) and reunites all the different races in Ferelden, which are human, dwarf and elf, to fight the Darkspawn and the Archdemon (dragon) in charge of them, basically something very similar to Lord of the Rings' orcs but that can infect everyone with their blood and turn them into Darkspawn too.
You should read the "chapter" below with her life before leaving the circle and her personality, but also know that she sacrifices her magic at the end, and that if your muse meets her she's looking for a cure that will save her life (and the other Grey Wardens' life) because to become a Grey Warden and fight evil she had to drink tainted blood, to be able to sense Darkspawn close by, and that means that in a few years she'll hear the Calling, and either become Darkspawn if the stays or have to choose to go underground to die fighting it. Neria says no to both.
Until the last battle she doesn't remember her life before the Circle even if she was six by the time she arrived, she's guessing something bad went down. If she doesn't know your muse well, she'll make something up.
-felt a daughter's love for Irving, and thought they had a mutual familial relationship going and found ways to spend time with him, looking up to him and searching for his approval. Unable to stand life trapped in a tower, she coped by convincing herself they were all a big family and the Circle knew best, and that includes befriending only Jowan because mages are supposed to stay isolated.
-When Jowan asks for her help to escape with his Lily, she doesn't go tell Irving - because it's for love. She's a romantic so of course she'll help him (and have her own phylactery destroyed too, in the back of her mind she's not okay with templars being able to track her down). But Jowan betrays them, using blood magic of all things, Irving agrees she should be punished, just as if she were any other student.
Because to him she is nothing more.
That's when it all comes crashing down on her: she doesn't have a big family in the Circle, she doesn't have a father in Irving, she was betrayed and left behind by Jowan, she may have her personality wiped too via Tranquility, given that she doesn't miss an occasion to fight with Greagoir and she's going to be blamed for aiding a blood mage, and it changes her. Because she has to admit that she brainwashed herself.
-When she joins the Wardens it's out of pettiness, but quickly it becomes about saving people. She does get immediately attached to Duncan (and Alistair) as well, deep down still trying to find out where her father-figure is supposed to be. When Loghain betrays them all, he signs his death sentence. She'll be relentless.
-She's always joking around, and running towards adventure and towards saving people, repressing bad feelings and traumas while encouraging others to vent, very 'it is what it is, bro' about things but caring, accepts Alistair's decision that she should be in charge with some reluctance at first, but then it grows on her. She tries not to make any new enemies and is very diplomatic, and that makes all the more jarring how bitter, dark and rage-y she gets when Jowan (or the Circle) is involved: later she allows him to leave his cell in Redcliffe and she's furious the entire time; she goes into the fade to save Connor herself, and finally leaves Jowan to Teagan who imprisons him again. Sometimes her facade breaks and it's obvious that she is full of anger.
-she's not chill and instead very aggressive when it comes to elf-racism, mages and apostates being shunned, and won't shut up about her politics and morals: after the Circle she doesn't believe in 'organized magic' anyway, "if they want to stay out of that prison, they should".
-She's single by default so we can leave doors open to ship, though if our characters are not shippable due to our choices/sexuality, it'll be implied that she has a star-crossed lovers thing with Alistair. Unless you play Alistair himself or a Hero who is dating him, in which case she's fallen for Zevran. Basically if you play Leliana or Dorian or Iron Bull? She still has feelings for Alistair. If you play a straight or bisexual Cullen, or Zevran? She's single. If you play Alistair? It depends.
-Her endgame in my head is that she finds a cure for the Blight, marries the love of her life, whether she has biological kids or not she adopts a couple of orphans. Has many dogs.
-While she encourages Alistair to become king, she respects he doesn't want to. She'll offer to be "secretly in charge" if he takes the crown so he doesn't have to deal with it, if that's what it takes to keep Anora away. Anora is imprisoned if Neria has any say in it. Loghain is executed. Her final (non canon) suggestion is to appoint a regent who will actually rule while they still live as Wardens, Alistair can retire and be king later if he wants.
-There is a truce between Dalish and werewolves but only after Zathrian is convinced to sacrifice himself. She helps Bhelen in Orzammar (I have very few memories of this quest because I always try to get past it as quickly as possible, but I remember one important thing about the dwarfs-quests: she does help Dagna with her dream even if she warns her against the Circle, kills Ruck and tells his mother he died as a hero). She saves the mages at the Circle too and it's a bitter time, because as much as she'd like to agree with Cullen and kill them all 'just to be safe' she knows that's not the way.
After either scenario, she remembers that the first time her magic showed was "when the bad men came to the alienage to take her mother away, and her fire magic exploded". She blew up half the street and killed everyone there in the process, including her parents.
She's from Denerim and may be recognized there as the little demon who did that.
-SCENARIO A, automatic if she's the HoF and you don't ask me for scenario B (below): while she's ready to die for the Cause and wants to kill the Archdemon herself after deciding that she won't force Alistair to sleep with Morrigan. But he sacrifices himself as a result of that. After Alistair dies for her, she finds an imprisoned Jowan, forces him to send her to the fade so she can get the right demon to help her change what happened, transferring her memories to her past self so she'll make a better choice; this time around the ritual with Morrigan is performed. She strikes the Archdemon down herself though the battle is a mess the second time around.
Both she and Jowan remember this.
In exchange for it, her magic is gone forever, disappearing after the final battle. She has enchanted items thanks to Sandal, whom she cares for very much, but she can't access her own magic.
The demon who gave her the curse offered her a deal: share her body to get her magic back, because no magic user can just cut off that part of themselves and not long to have it back. They underestimated the fact that she did it for love (be it romantic or familial). Regardless, she will not tell her friends and she'll leave as planned (until they meet again).
This canon divergence is because Neria's writer, me, had no idea Alistair would die, so she went back to an earlier save and changed things, and she wanted to reflect that.
If you rather NOT accept this divergence because it involves sending memories bacj in time, ask me for the SCENARIO B, which is also automatic if Neria is a follower of your HoF (while if she's the Hero in this scenario she will convince Alistair to perform the ritual so they can both survive and there's no need to change the past): she will eventually lose access to her magic by making a deal with a demon to save a loved one's life: it can be your muse or by default it will be her bestie Zevran. She doesn't regret it one bit, but it hurts like hell not to have a part of herself anymore. Regardless, she will not tell her friends and leave as planned (until they meet again).
There is a lot of being cute with Alistair regardless of where the relationship goes because she can't resist a Soft Boy.
Surprisingly it's Zevran of all people who awakens her protective instincts the most, especially after he shares more of his life.
She's sincerely attached to Wynne. Listen to her advice except when it comes to romance. Mother figure because Neria just cannot help herself with family-figures.
She saves everyone in her path or tries to, which also means Sten and Shale are joining the team. She finds them hilarious most of the time, especially Shale, who is her girl; she never misses an opportunity to hear her opinion and gets her gems so she can feel prettier.
She's not as close to Morrigan and Leiana (this changes by the time of DAI) because they both feel too extreme in their beliefs to her (happy to change this in rp). Talks a lot to Sten because curious and amused by him, helps Oghren as best as she can but she's not as close. Usually she takes Alistair, Wynne and Zevran out with her (and would take Shale, but the game only allows 3 people so it gets messy). Loves staying at camp, plays with her mabari "Dog" all the time. She'd die for her dog Dog.
They are all allowed to notice she's repressing a lot while genuinely caring for them.
she tries to be as nice as possible (to her companions) not just because "Friendship!" which is initially not even a goal, but to keep people on her side because she needs them. This is why she may not show how much she disapproves of certain comments/beliefs from her companions: she doesn't like when Morrigan and Sten are unhappy to help people, she doesn't believe in the Maker but won't be harsh with Leiana about it (though they aren't the closest of friends either, more like friendly comrades), she doesn't like killing people but won't sound judgy when Zevran tries to figure out how she feels about it all, and the reason she gets far closer to him than she is to Morrigan is that he flirts a lot and pays her compliments, and that endeared him to her, so she ended up sharing way more conversations with him which made her see he's not going to betray her too (despite that, she bought Morrigan's friendship with gifts, and still went to "kill" her mother for her). She's not too personally close to Oghren, but she does have drinks with him every now and then.
She doesn't harden anyone and helps them in their personal missions, considers them family.
-Shale is somewhere nearby taking care of Dog and researching ways to go back to being a dwarf with the books Neria has found for her
-Sandal and Bodahn are brought to Vigil's keep because Neria loves Sandal so much, it's just how it is. He keeps enchanting everything she has so she's safe while learning how to not be a mage and still be the Warden Commander
-She saves and helps everyone, still.
-Generally has Anders, Justice, and Nathaniel in her team
-she's more closed off at the beginning, doesn't share much about herself or her life, is sad but pretends she's not. But she can't resist friendship and being sentimental (telling Sigrun she doesn't want to lose a friend) so I'm not sure of how long that can last
-she's in pieces after meeting Wynne again because she knows Wynne doesn't have long
-The atmosphere when she meets Alistair is the 'lost lovers because life is ripping them apart' kind
-at the end she has to start looking for a cure to the Callings/Blight while still helping people she finds and advocating for mages and elves.
-her 'I'm in charge of the Wardens and I say we are family' approach tends to be well accepted by the average Warden, given that Duncan had the 'make Wardens all the people who are about to be murdered and have just been abandoned/betrayed or were lost/alone' approach. On average those people appreciate loyalty and safety.
-If she meets people she knew at the time of DAO, whether former companions or people like Cullen (whom she assumes doesn't remember her outside of being the HoF), she'll have high school nostalgia and be fond of them from the get-go (unless they were enemies) and that can mean actually bonding more with Leliana now than in DAO if Leliana is an NPC I can control (if you write her we'll probably have them bonding when she joins the party). It's ridiculous but that's how it is, with her memories of that year it's either complete horror and trauma or 'good times'.
-Speaking of which, Cullen was someone she found cute, and she playfully flirted with him (only for him to run away) she never realized he actually liked her (which is what he says to a mage Inquisitor if romanced, but doesn't have to be canon for your Cullen).
There should be no reason why characters from DA2 can't bump into the Hero of Ferelden, though she's not publicizing herself as such and is re-learning how to be part of the world without magic. By default, for DAI characters, she was reached by a letter written by Leiana, and showed up to give a hand. It's been ten years, she has definitely learned how to fight without magic. She was looking for a cure to the Callings/Blight and was close when she started hearing the Calling herself, but with Neria being Neria and never what "the Establishment" says (in this case the Grey Wardens ??) she investigated and figured out it was fake. She went to check on Alistair first, then and on this new Inquisition. She's not taking charge but she knows her reputation may help the Inquisitor in keeping people hopeful.
VERY uncomfortable "supporting" someone who is being called the "Herald of Andraste" given how she doesn't believe in superior entities, but she goes with it.
She's also spending her time campaigning for mages to simply be brought to schools until they learn how to deal with magic properly, and then to be back among others while still going to their magic-classes with templars defending both sides, mages and non mages, from criminals. She advocates for elven rights. So basically she's fighting everyone: what are they gonna do, stab me? I'm the Hero of Ferelden.
She's in Lothering after surviving Ostagar, taken there by a mage who found her unconscious; Duncan didn't have time to introduce her to the Hero of Ferelden but Alistair has likely seen her once or twice in the past, she hasn't been a Warden for long but she was still saved by Duncan and brought in to help with the Blight. She needs to have had her Jowan storyline or a nearly identical one in which Irving is ready to have her punished for helping a friend who claimed not to be a blood mage but was lying, since it's vital to her development, so she's been saved by Duncan too; you can see what kind of advice she'd give by reading her choices here but she's all for saving people EVEN when they are pro/work in the Circle.
She'd get attached the most to the same people from her Hero backstory (Alistair, Zevran, Wynne, Shale, the dog, Sandal), and only question the Warden's authority if they expect blind obedience, she'll be a friend and NOT a subordinate because she's done that before, no thank you, otherwise she has decided that the situation requires gritting her teeth and accepting a leader once again which she can't be right now, a leader that she'd follow because she wants to help save the world and eventually out of loyalty - her companion-mission, for which she requires the Warden's help, is to find her ex best friend, Jowan or the NPC who betrayed her, so she can decide their fate. She's hardened if the Warden supports killing them, she tries to move on and stays herself if the Warden supports getting him arrested. If hardened she doesn't talk as much anymore, too angry, and will fight and potentially leave if the Warden is too authoritative. If she stays "nice" she'll actually talk more.
