My experience and access to the music program in the Randolph Public Schools formed the backbone of the legal and military professional that I am today. The music program helped me develop critical thinking skills, which I use now in my legal career, taught me humility and leadership, which I use now in my military career, and gave me confidence, which I exude all day and every day.
I earned my M.Ed, Ed.S in School Counselor Education from UMass Amherst! in May, I run the website and am one of the moderators of the Facebook group.
I benefitted from access to the art and counseling programs throughout my time in the Randolph Public Schools. Ms. Fancher-Kelley taught me the importance of sustainability and project-based learning. It serves as the foundation in how I support young people in counseling. I utilized school counseling services K-12; this is something I realized during grad school. My fondest memories of counseling occurred in high school with Mr. Medeiros and Mrs. Tavares. Their willingness to communicate with me and collaborate with teachers to support my specific needs made it easier for me to tackle obstacles during the school year. In fact, Mrs. Tavares was the one who told me about the pathway to become a school counselor.
Middle School Band Director, Ossining, NY
Everything about my time with the arts in Randolph Public Schools shaped my post-graduate experiences. I was inspired at a young age by the music educators in Randolph who spent time in the band program (2000-2009) tirelessly advocating for its advancement after budget cuts in 2003 left the curriculum minimally accessible, particularly for the elementary students. My teachers spent hours of their time volunteering their services to the students of RPS Music Program, offering lessons before and after school. The rebirth of the RHS pep band and my teachers' passion was my inspiration to pursue music education.
In addition, the friendships and life lessons on teamwork, perseverance and overcoming adversity, both in the music classroom and through my participation in RPS sports have been an impetus in my advocacy for the value of social-emotional learning for my own students. We may have been a small band, but I will always cherish the memories I made in creating music with my Period 7 band class!

To me, music is like another language. Like a language, music has its own culture, teachings, and ideologies that are applicable to life. Music has taught me the importance of communication, perseverance, trust, and creativity, concepts essential as both an engineer and musician.

During school art was a time for relaxation in the middle of a hectic school day. I especially enjoyed painting because it didn’t require me to be an expert artist, and the art teachers were always very helpful. Since taking a painting class in high school, it's become a hobby of my own. I was even able to paint and design my graduation cap! I’m extremely grateful for the art teachers who helped me along the way.
The purpose of school is to educate the whole child, and the purpose of public school is to educate every child. Accomplishing those goals takes more than teaching a few courses that have standardized tests attached to them. We need to ensure that every student in Randolph Public Schools is physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially healthy, and we need to teach our students that there are worthwhile pursuits in addition to math, science and language arts.
The holistic, healthy development of every Randolph Public Schools student in our care depends upon our ability to deliver accessible support services and the diverse curriculum necessary for a well-rounded education. The music, art, and physical education programs provide opportunities for our students to be collaborative, curious and creative. These courses provide limitless opportunities for cross-curricular learning and connections. Prioritizing our students' mental, social, physical, and emotional health is the nucleus of our learning community.
