Organizations such as IUCN and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), specifically WWF India, have made efforts towards conserving this species. WWF reports that “a strategy and action plan for the Ganges river dolphin conservation has been formulated for Uttar Pradesh with the help of the State Forest Department. A network of partners for the Ganges River Dolphin Conservation in the country is also created”. This is seen as a good starting place, as previous conservation efforts had reportedly been “completely ineffective”, reports the IUCN. The species is legally protected in all range states, including dolphin reserves or sanctuaries such as The Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary, Bihar, India. However, there is currently little support from the Indian government to enforce such measures.
By donating to organizations trying to make a difference, such as the WWF, you can help to save this endangered species.
The petition will be sent to the High Commissioner of Canada in India (similar to an ambassador), and the Ministers of Environment, Forest and Climate Change of India and Bangladesh, urging them to take action in order to preserve this species.
The petition will address the sender, then read the following message:
"The Ganges river dolphin's population is declining rapidly, and unless actions are taken, this species may face extinction. We ask that you move to take further actions to protect the dolphin's natural habitat, as well as properly enforce measures that are currently in place, before it is too late."
As all the problems pushing this creature and man made, it must be man who comes up with the solution. Remember what Edmund Burke once said; "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."
