The Kadazandusun community believes that the Bobohizan possess the ability to communicate with the spirits of the deceased. They play a vital role within Kadazandusun society, serving as spiritual leaders and cultural custodians. Traditionally, Bobohizan are women, most of whom are elderly, and their presence is essential in initiating and conducting ritual ceremonies.
The Bobohizan are traditional priestesses of the Kadazandusun community in Sabah and represent one of the most important forms of intangible cultural heritage in the state. Traditionally female and often elderly, Bobohizan are highly respected figures who possess deep spiritual knowledge passed down orally across generations. Their role is central to maintaining harmony between humans, nature, and the spirit world.
Historically, Bobohizan were responsible for leading sacred rituals, healing ceremonies, and agricultural rites. One of their most significant roles is during Kaamatan, the harvest festival, where they perform thanksgiving rituals dedicated to Bambarayon, the spirit of rice. Through ritual chants known as rinait, ceremonial songs, and offerings of food, Bobohizan express gratitude and seek blessings for prosperity and balance. These practices reflect the Kadazandusun belief that spiritual forces are deeply connected to daily life and the natural environment.
Beyond ritual leadership, Bobohizan serve as cultural custodians. They preserve ancient oral literature, ritual language, and indigenous belief systems that are not documented in written form. Becoming a Bobohizan requires years of learning, discipline, and spiritual calling, making the role both rare and sacred
Today, the Bobohizan tradition is endangered due to modernisation, declining interest among younger generations, and the passing of elder priestesses without successors. Preserving this heritage is vital not only to protect Kadazandusun identity, but also to ensure that Sabah’s cultural wisdom and spiritual traditions continue to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
