Jazz Combo is the top jazz improv course focusing on individual performance and virtuosity. Chamber Ensemble is where advanced students from Orchestra and Symphonic Band explore smaller works from various style periods. Jazz Improv is divided into 4 separate classes allowing for smaller groups with appropriate leveled instruction.

Jazz Combo and Chamber Ensemble are eliminated. Jazz Improv is consolidated into two larger groups. Mixing levels means either advanced students aren't challenged, or beginners struggle to keep up. It also means certain students (piano, bass, drums) must share an instrument, cutting playing time into a fraction of what it should be.
To reverse these arbitrary cuts, the administration must reinstate canceled courses and restore the Newton South Music Department to 2.7 FTEs.
