Elucidating the Role of BOD1 in neurodevelopment
I work with BOD1, a novel kinetochore protein that plays a role in cell division. Defects in BOD1 cause improper attachment of microtubule spindle fibers to chromosomes during the metaphase of cell division. BOD1 also has a moonlighting function in neurodevelopment. Mutations in BOD1 have been linked to Intellectual Disability, learning and sensory defects, craniofacial defects, and schizophrenia in human patients. Besides this, it also regulates learning and memory in some Drosophila models and affects synaptic branching. I have created a Zebrafish knockout line of BOD1 and I am trying to understand how BOD1 mutations affects the development of various neural circuits. I will do this using fixed and live imaging techniques, as well as through behavioural analysis.
