We Need Blended Security

Stacy Prowell, Ph.D.

Distinguished Cybersecurity Researcher

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)

Abstract

Cyberphysical systems require cyberphysical security, and an understanding of both the cyber and physical security issues. Securing critical infrastructure requires addressing every aspect of the system. In this case abstractions can work against us by hiding the true state of the system. For complex systems trust can be abused and can work against us in securing the system. In these cases we cannot rely on direct assessments of system alone, but must rely on additional indicators, such as side channels, remote attestation, AI/ML techniques, and other emerging technologies.
