Alison Cannon is one of our Speech Language Pathologists and she has supported students at SAS for close to two decades now. Alison will describe the over-arching framework linking "verbal communication" and the more nuanced "non-verbal communication" that is more related to how we use our language when interacting with others. It's often of great value to explain how seemingly disparate challenges for a child or young person, may be linked at a more functional level.
Alison will also highlight the difference between observing and intervening with behaviors (behavior modification, developing behaviors in a child or young person that more closely approximate a desired target) and the view Speech-Language Pathologists (and most Therapists - such as O.Ts) operate from - which is a developmental perspective. Often times, seeing the developmental level of a student's underlying skills explains a great deal about the more observable behavior and why it may or may not be something the student is able to adjust easily.

Does your middle schooler seem forgetful, disorganized, or mismanage their time? During this interactive session facilitated by the middle school counseling team, parents will learn about executive function skills, what they are, why they are important and how they develop throughout childhood and adolescence. Participants will also learn about the overlap between executive function skills and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Parents will have the opportunity to explore three executive function skills through the lens of their child’s life and learn how to support the development of these skills at home. Finally, we will provide parents with resources and practical tools to support their children’s development of strong executive functioning skills to foster success in school and life.
Tuesday, 12 September 8:30-9:30 (P220)
Elementary school Deans of Student Life, Dylan Meikle, and Sarah Farris, are excited to launch a three-part series for parents titled SEL Spotlight: Partnering With Parents.
Families are a child’s first teacher and an essential factor in the cultivation of social emotional competencies throughout a child’s life. When schools and families work together, they can build strong connections that reinforce social-emotional skill development (https://casel.org/).
In our time together Dylan and Sarah will give a brief introduction to social-emotional learning (SEL), explore hopes and dreams you have for your child and the school year ahead, as well as zoom in on gratitude. This coffee is an opportunity to learn from each other and explore our shared hopes for our children's development.
