What is SASHIKO?
SASHIKO is simple and effective, a form of traditional stitching from Japan. It originated in the northern part of Japan about 500 years ago, to strengthen homespun clothes, put them together and keep them warm. When people were very poor, fabrics were very valuable. Women sewed old clothes and fabrics together. It created a lot of beautiful geometric patterns, and now Sashiko is one of the popular Japanese traditional craft works.

JAFA Japan Australia Friendship Association
The Japan Australia Friendship Association (JAFA) was established in 1998 as a social and cultural non-profit volunteer organisation to promote friendship between Australia and Japan.
Japan is a unique country that holds an attraction for many people in South Australia. The State's links with Japan go back over a hundred years, and today we have the largest percentage of people in Australia studying Japanese.
People who know there is more to Japan than Mount Fuji, cherry blossoms and geisha have founded JAFA to give Australians and Japanese a chance to join informal social gatherings. This is not a business organisation or networking group. Our focus is on building social and cultural friendships.
Many members of JAFA have studied Japanese, been to Japan on a student exchange, worked or lived there. Some have married Japanese and brought their families to live in Australia. Others have varied interests in Japanese culture from Kabuki to Karaoke and Manga.
Whatever your particular connection or interest with Japan may be, we look forward to meeting you at one of our upcoming events.
JAFA exists through the support and contribution of its members to bring quality Japan-related cultural and social events to South Australia. JAFA membership entitles you to an array of Japan-related benefits in Adelaide.
