CODE OF CONDUCT
“Figure skating etiquette emphasizes safety and respect for others on the ice, requiring skaters to be aware of their surroundings, avoid collisions, and keep moving. Key rules include keeping your head up, not stopping in high-traffic areas, and giving right of way to those with music or in lessons. You should also follow rink-specific rules like not kicking the ice, keeping conversations off the ice, and promptly getting up if you fall.”
Below are key points we expect all skaters to follow:
• Listen to officials
Always follow the instructions of the ice monitor or rink staff immediately. If you are asked to leave the ice, please do so without delay. We have had several instances where skaters remained on the ice after their scheduled time or stepped on before group sessions ended. Please be mindful of your designated skating time unless otherwise directed by the ice monitor.
• Keep the ice clean
Do not kick the ice or boards, stomp, scrape, or dig holes. Dispose of any trash in the appropriate bins
• Follow music rules
Please respect the music rotation. Do not stop or restart your music if other skaters are waiting. Skaters working on their program will be wearing a bright belt around their waist. Others should do their best to move out of their path. We understand that newer skaters may not always react quickly—just try your best so we can keep everyone safe.
• Program right-of-way
The only time a skater has the full right of way is when they are skating their program to music. When you hear another skater’s music, please give them space and allow them to pass. This takes only a moment, and the same courtesy will be extended when it’s your turn.
• Be a good competitor
Do not intentionally interfere with another skater’s practice.
Advanced skaters should show patience toward beginners. We all started as new skaters, and it takes time to build confidence and awareness on shared ice.
• Maintain respectful behavior
Unsafe or disrespectful behavior—on or off the ice, and at any time representing SFSC—will not be tolerated and may result in suspension or removal from the club. Coaches and the Board of Directors have full authority in monitoring skater conduct.
Always show respect for the sport, all skaters, coaches, and ice monitors. Bad language or inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated.
Thank you for helping us maintain a safe, respectful, and welcoming environment for all of our skaters. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.
