Amy has a Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Sam Houston State University and a Masters of Education in Counseling and Development from Lamar University. After almost 9 years in the classroom, she decided to follow her dream and become a school counselor. In her spare time, she loves to read and spend time with family and friends.
Tanya has a Bachelor's of Arts in Psychology from Fisk University, in Nashville, TN. In 2012, she received a Master of Education from the University of St. Thomas. Tanya was an elementary teacher for 11 years and left the classroom to be a high school counselor for 3 years. As an elementary teacher and a high school counselor she gained knowledge that has helped her serve the families of Sartartia Middle School.
Katherine Friedel has a Masters degree in Counseling from UTSA. She has worked with PreK-12th grade students since 2004. Her favorite parts of her job here at SMS is visiting with her students and teaching guidance lessons. Her main goal is to help her students become more independent learners, get involved in school and prepare for the challenges of high school and beyond.
Sartartia Middle School counselors work closely with the administration team to design a developmentally appropriate and comprehensive program that supports students through classroom guidance lessons, small group targeted instruction, and individual student intervention, as well as providing parent support and community collaboration.
Sartartia counselors incorporate culture, diversity, and tolerance into school-wide events, like our Heritage Day program, Mental Health Awareness Week, A.I.R. Bud Award (student of the month), Coffee with the Counselor's, Parent University, monthly newsletter, and awards nights to celebrate student achievement. Sartartia counselors also participate in monthly Jag Watch meetings to discuss how to ensure all students are successful and have individual meetings with students that are struggling academically.
