It’s not about being perfect when you’re learning. We make mistakes and fix mistakes, which is an important part of the learning process. In this class, you will have opportunities to re-do or make corrections to some assignments. If your initial attempt is on time and you are asked to make corrections to an assignment, late penalties do not apply.
Canvas Interactive Reading Quizzes, Module Checkpoints, and Unit Checkpoints: You will have three attempts on each quiz in these grading categories. After each attempt, you will receive immediate feedback for your answers for you to learn and correct in your next attempt. Only your highest score will count towards your grade.
Canvas Discussion Boards: Your grade for your initial post in each discussion board is based on your effort and completion of the task, not based on accuracy. Your initial post must be meaningful and relevant to the prompt. You must make a good-faith effort to answer each aspect of the prompt. After you post, you will see posts from your classmates as well as the correct answer. To earn full credit for the discussion board, if there are any mistakes in your initial post, you will reply to your initial post with corrections. These corrections must be in your own words, not copied from classmates or the answer provided.
Groupwork & Unit Projects: Throughout the course, you will participate in assignments that involve peer reviews. After you submit your first draft, you will have an opportunity to complete peer reviews and sometimes view a sample response from your instructor. After you've had an opportunity to learn from mistakes you may have made, you will resubmit your work with a self-evaluation along with any corrections needed.
To count as your attendance during the first week and to avoid being dropped, be sure to log into the course and complete the assignments in the orientation module. I will check in on you if you forget to participate.
Assignments will be due weekly on Canvas. To avoid being dropped, it is important for you to log in and complete work regularly. If you do not make progress for four or more consecutive days (including weekends), I'll be emailing you to check in and help you re-engage with the course.
Lastly, the final project is very important. You will need to submit the final project in order to pass the class.
The need to turn in late work occurs for a variety of reasons. The important thing is to talk to me about it so that I can support you. If you know that you are going to be absent or an emergency arises, please let me know and see if it is possible to turn in an assignment early or make it up on a different day.
Homework will be due every week. The best learning experience is one in which you keep pace with the posted due dates on Canvas. Keeping pace helps you to digest the material with deeper understanding. If you are not keeping up with the class, I will contact you to see how I can support you in this effort.
With the understanding that keeping up with the work is what is best going to support your learning, I understand that life happens and sometimes it is not possible to get something done by the due date. Don’t be worried if you miss something. I’ve built in these safeguards so that if you do miss something, your overall grade will not be harmed.
Lowest scores from each grading category will be dropped so that if you unexpectedly miss a deadline or two due to illness or personal reasons, your grade will not be harmed.
All reading quizzes, module checkpoints and unit checkpoints on Canvas will remain unlocked for you to complete after the due date for two days. Once two days from the original due date has passed, all prior material will lock, and you will not be able to complete it for credit.
Some assignments do not have flexibility because they involve communication with your classmates. The following assignment must be completed in real-time and cannot be made up after the due date. If you miss one, don’t worry, your lowest scores will be dropped so your grade will not be harmed.
Discussion boards, Groupwork, & Unit Projects require a “back and forth” conversation between participants. It is important that all students submit their work by a certain time to allow classmates time to read and respond to peer reviews. For this reason, discussion boards, groupwork, and unit projects have strict, inflexible due dates. Once the deadline for peer reviews and submissions are due, the assignments will lock, and you will no longer be able to submit for credit.
Cuyamaca College students are bound by the Student Code of Conduct. In this course, cheating, plagiarism, fraud and/or lying may result in a grade of “F” for the assignment/test with no make-up work permitted. Any of these infractions may also result in formal disciplinary action by the Associate Dean of Student Affairs as described in the Student Code of Conduct.
Often referred to as "netiquette," here is a gentle reminder of the interaction practices and rules we'll follow in all our interactions in this course. If you ever feel that someone is not following these rules, please send a message to me and describe your concerns.
