If you want a lightweight, vehicle-friendly carrier that mounts to your trunk without needing a hitch receiver, choose Saris Bones Car Trunk; if you need heavy-duty stability for e-bikes and easy access to your cargo area while the bikes are still on board, choose Maxsa Innovations Hitch Bike Rack.
For new drivers navigating the complexities of gear transport, the choice often comes down to whether you prioritize ease of installation and vehicle compatibility or raw capacity and ride stability. Both products solve the problem of moving two bicycles, but they do so in fundamentally different ways that dictate which one belongs in your garage. The Saris Bones relies on a clever, arc-based design that clamps onto your car's body lines, whereas the Maxsa Innovations demands a 2-inch hitch receiver but offers a platform system designed for modern, heavier electric bikes. Understanding these mechanical differences is the only way to ensure you don't end up with a rack that doesn't fit your car or can't handle your specific bike setup.
• The trade-off is that it places direct contact points on your car's paint and requires manual ratcheting straps for every trip. This pick is for drivers who lack a hitch receiver or want a portable solution that fits in a small trunk space.
• Maxsa Innovations Hitch Bike Rack: Its biggest strength is the 200-pound total load capacity and anti-wobble system that keeps heavy e-bikes stable on the highway. This pick is for owners of trucks, SUVs, or RVs carrying fat-tire bikes or electric models.
The Saris Bones Car Trunk is built around a philosophy of minimalism and versatility. The design features an arc-based structure that separates bikes on different levels, preventing them from touching each other during transit. This separation is crucial for protecting both the frames and the drivetrains of your bicycles, ensuring that chain grease or handlebars don't scratch the finish of another bike.
What makes this rack particularly compelling for many drivers is its universal compatibility. The manufacturer states it is designed to fit most vehicles, including those with spoilers, thanks to rubberized feet that protect the car's finish. The mounting system uses coated straps and ratcheting mechanisms to secure the unit, meaning you do not need any permanent modifications to your car. The injection-molded arms and legs provide a strong frame that resists rust, utilizing 100% recyclable materials in its construction. For someone who wants a durable, long-lasting tool that won't rust out after a few seasons of exposure to the elements, this build quality stands out.

However, this product is not for everyone. Because it mounts directly to the trunk or hatch, it requires careful placement to avoid damaging sensitive areas like spoilers or painted surfaces, even with the protective rubber pads. Users must manually attach the spring buckle straps and vinyl-coated hooks to the bike frames, a process that takes time before every drive. If you frequently transport multiple sets of bikes or have very large vehicles where reaching the trunk is difficult, the manual strapping process might feel tedious compared to a platform-style hitch rack. It is best suited for drivers who value portability and a low-profile look over heavy-load capacity.
The Maxsa Innovations Hitch Bike Rack is engineered for power users who need to move substantial weight without sacrificing stability. The frame is constructed from high-strength alloy steel, providing the rigidity necessary to support fat tires and heavy motors without flexing. This structural integrity is paired with a proprietary anti-wobble system that locks tightly into a 2-inch hitch receiver, eliminating the rattling and movement that often plague cheaper carriers on rough terrain or highways.
One of the standout features for daily drivers is the tilt mechanism. Unlike trunk racks that block access to your rear cargo when loaded, this unit allows you to tilt the entire rack downward. This provides immediate access to the trunk or cargo area of your vehicle without the need to remove your bikes first. Additionally, the foldable design allows the rack to be collapsed into a compact shape for storage when not in use, addressing the common issue of bulky equipment taking up valuable garage space. The three-point mounting system, which includes a front wheel cradle, rear wheel tray strap, and locking wheel clamp, ensures that bikes remain firmly in place regardless of road conditions.
This product is strictly for vehicles equipped with a 2-inch hitch receiver. It is compatible with cars, SUVs, trucks, RVs, minivans, and crossovers, but the absence of a hitch makes it impossible to use. Furthermore, the dimensions are significant, extending far behind the vehicle, which requires awareness of turning radius and parking space. It is ideal for families with multiple heavy bikes or riders who frequently travel on highways where stability is paramount, provided their vehicle has the necessary towing hardware.
• Best for E-bike and Heavy Bike Transport → Maxsa Innovations Hitch Bike Rack: With a 200-lb capacity and support for tires up to 4.7 inches wide, it handles modern heavy loads that a trunk rack cannot safely manage.
• Best for Vehicle Compatibility Without Hardware → Saris Bones Car Trunk: It fits almost any sedan, coupe, or hatchback without requiring a hitch receiver, making it accessible to a wider range of car owners.
• Best for Storage Space → Maxsa Innovations Hitch Bike Rack: The foldable design collapses for compact storage, though the folded unit is still heavy; the Saris folds flat but is lighter to store anywhere.
• Best for Ease of Cargo Access → Maxsa Innovations Hitch Bike Rack: The tilt function lets you open your trunk with bikes still attached, a feature the Saris trunk rack simply cannot offer.
• Best for Ride Stability on Rough Roads → Maxsa Innovations Hitch Bike Rack: The anti-wobble lock and platform design prevent the swaying and bouncing common with strap-on trunk systems.
• Best for Preventing Bike-to-Bike Contact → Saris Bones Car Trunk: The arc-based design naturally separates bikes vertically, reducing the risk of frame contact during transport.
• Best for Durability Against Elements → Both are Strong: The Saris uses rust-free materials and the Maxsa uses high-strength alloy steel; both are built to last, but the Maxsa's platform style may accumulate more road grime.
I would personally buy the Maxsa Innovations Hitch Bike Rack if my vehicle had a hitch receiver, primarily because the ability to tilt the rack and carry heavy e-bikes safely outweighs the extra weight. The anti-wobble system gives me confidence on long highway drives that a strap-on rack cannot match. However, if I did not have a hitch or was driving a smaller car where a hitch would be impractical, I would immediately switch to the Saris Bones Car Trunk. For new drivers specifically, the Saris is often the safer starting point because it avoids the complexity of installing and maintaining a hitch system, offering a simple, reliable way to get started with bike transport without committing to vehicle modifications.
Only vehicles equipped with a 2-inch hitch receiver can use the Maxsa Innovations rack; it will not fit sedans or cars without a tow hitch.
Yes, the Maxsa rack features a quick tilt function that lowers the bikes to allow full access to the vehicle's trunk or cargo area without removing the bikes.
