Understanding the Basics:
  • Sarcopenia is defined as muscle loss

  • Natural muscle loss due to age can be accelerated due to:

    • lower overall nutritional intake of the aging population

    • chronic diseases[10,11].

  • Proper nutritional intake and exercise can lessen muscle loss over time, but there is no way to prevent sarcopenia from happening entirely [10, 12].

  • Sarcopenia can pose major health issues as it impacts the quality of life, mortality, and overall health issues of the elderly.

  • It is estimated that the United States will spend over $18 billion dollars to care for patients who have been affected by sarcopenia by the year 2050 and at that point, approximately 75% of the geriatric population will be sarcopenic [8, 9, 11].

The following pages are designed to provide information regarding the nutrients and exercise needed to maintain healthy muscles through the aging process.
