Sarcopenia is defined as muscle loss
Natural muscle loss due to age can be accelerated due to:
lower overall nutritional intake of the aging population
chronic diseases[10,11].
Proper nutritional intake and exercise can lessen muscle loss over time, but there is no way to prevent sarcopenia from happening entirely [10, 12].
Sarcopenia can pose major health issues as it impacts the quality of life, mortality, and overall health issues of the elderly.
It is estimated that the United States will spend over $18 billion dollars to care for patients who have been affected by sarcopenia by the year 2050 and at that point, approximately 75% of the geriatric population will be sarcopenic [8, 9, 11].
The following pages are designed to provide information regarding the nutrients and exercise needed to maintain healthy muscles through the aging process.
