Student Film
The basic idea I had when we first started production for our independent student films. Although crude in detail in it's first draft, my primary goal was to create a simple, cute, storybook-like visual.
Fred the Firefly, the grumpy little bug that is disturbed from his sleep.
Molly, the cheerful little girl that is full of energy.
Because Molly is the only human character in my animation, she needed more references to account for the extra little details. Compared to Fred, she is much more lively and expressive.
Molly's personality is that of a very curious and sweet child, so communicating this through her body language was important.
Fred was definitely the easier character to draw and animate, with his simple appendages and color palette.
Molly's design was more fun to figure out, especially in terms of believable anatomy. She originally was going to have more details, but was ultimately scrapped due to time constraints.
The flower Fred sleeps on in the beginning of the animation. Because it was such a close-up, I put in some extra effort into this still compared to the rest of the background shots.
Miscellaneous
Some studies I did with my original characters, Tsumiki and Kuro.
