Let’s Think Maths: developing strong pedagogies
Let's Think (formerly known as Cognitive Acceleration) is a pedagogical approach which emerged from a research project at King's College University in the 1980s and has substantial impact evidence. I co-authored the most recent journal article evidencing impact.
Let's Think is a Piagetian programme which builds on Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development and social construction theories. The lessons use a low threshold, high ceiling approach and expect pupils to work collaboratively to solve problems. The lessons include significant focus on developing pupils’ metacognitive skills. As pupils move through cycles of cognitive challenge, they reflect on their and their peers’ strategies to solving these problems.
I am an accredited Let's Think in Maths Tutor, and still work with leaders, teachers and schools to implement the approach. I have led Let's Think projects in the UK and internationally, including in Brasil, Latvia, Finland and Bulgaria.
As part of this work, I offer specific professional development and conference sessions on:
social construction;
metacognition;
cognitive challenges, for example 'desirable difficulties' (Bjork and Bjork, 2020);
designing low threshold, high ceiling lessons for mixed achieving classes.
