Mission Statement:
I hope to serve at an individual, community, and population level. I hope to gain experience with program development and sustainability and assist with expanding occupational therapy’s role in emerging practice areas. I aim to take every opportunity to confidently articulate the unique value and role of occupational therapy to others to promote better understanding of my profession.
Vision Statement:
I hope to utilize my position as an occupational therapist to address societal and occupational injustices occurring within underserved and invisible populations. My innate desire to address well-being at both an individual and societal level is an integral part of my identity, and that passion will continue to propel me throughout my career.
Summary of Literature Review and Needs Assessment:
Traditionally, OTs role in pediatric settings is providing one-on-one pull-out services for sensory processing, fine motor, and visual perceptual interventions, among others. Few opportunities exist for OTs to provide interventions from a multi-tiered approach, despite legislation supporting our ability to do so. Research shows that multi-tiered, preventative, and integrated services yield postive results in several student domains, including attention, mental wellness, emotional regulation, executive function, and others. Efforts are needed to advocate for the expasion of OTs role in outpatient and school-based settings since we are uniquly suited to provide holsitic, population-level interventions.
Purpose Statement:
My Capstone Experience allowed me to advocate for OTs role in multi-tiered services in the school-based setting and create occupation-based one Tier One/Two programs for early childhood-1st grade. It also allowed me to gain advanced clinical skills in an outpatient pediatric setting with SOS feeding, MRNI reflex integration techniques, and vision therapy.
Project Description:
The Capstone Experience is an individualized learning experience that all doctoral students are required to complete. My Capstone Experience took place from May - July 2022 at a large public school district and a rural outpatient pediatric clinic.
