Taking time to develop and elevate children makes coaches uniquely necessary. It takes a special person to cultivate effective student athletes. Similar to the classroom, differentiation occurs, but in exciting and unexpected ways. The intrinsic nature of the motivation and situation lends to a more familial atmosphere, and changes the way one leads. Investing time in others growth and progress is edifying for the coach as well. It is life changing. Coaching builds empathy in the spirit, and it is a breath of fresh air, at times, to see athletes in their element. That empathy is also sometimes brought about by watching and assisting those new to the circumstances. My experiences as a coach could never be duplicated in the classroom. These special moments of triumph and tribulation are wholly organic, and change with the sport and season of the athletes. Experiencing these times together allows for a deeper and richer partnership in education. As a classroom teacher I am more effective because they know I see their many sides.
