The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.
This is an activity I created for a unit on presentations and interviews. This activity was create to introduce students to the interview format, as well as review the outline format that we covered in an earlier unit.
A teacher should strive to "understand communication theory, language development, and the role of language in learning" (Knowledge Indicators 6C). This activity ensures that students will have practice both writing and using oral communication. Additionally, they will learn the necessary skill of taking down notes from a speaker.
This artifact helps my student develop content knowledge that will benifit them later in life. They will need to know how to be interviewed and conduct interviews. They must be able to take accurate notes when a speaker is talking. They must also be able to write coherently for a later paper. These are all steps I am taking to make sure I fulfill the expectations of Standard 6.
I created this unit during my time student teaching at Illiana Christian High School. It was made to improve the quality of presentations students were giving during their freshman year.
A teacher "Knows and models standard conventions of written and oral communications" (Knowledge Indicators 6E). A huge part of oral communication in English is the ability to give a professional presentation. Students need to know how to create slides, speak with confidence, and present without notes. This unit is meant to help students acquire these skills so they will be prepared for later assignments in high school, and other opportunities later in life.
By creating this unit, I ensured my students have the basic knowledge for presentations that will come later in the semester. It is also a launch point for our speech unit that will directly follow this one. I am intentionally taking steps to ensure my students have the necessary content knowledge for proper oral communication, both in class and in the larger world.
