Sitarist from the Jaipur Senia Gharana
Saptarshi Hazra is a sitar player from the Jaipur Senia gharana of India. He learned music, starting in early childhood, from Pandit Netai Basu, one of the most committed and talented disciples of Ustaad Mushtaq Ali Khan of the Jaipur Senia gharana. After the demise of Pandit Netai Basu, Saptarshi continued his taalim (training) with the Sarod maestro Pandit Buddhadev Dasgupta. Saptarshi performs regularly at musical conferences and cultural organizations throughout India.
As a member of the Senia lineage, Saptarshi plays sitars of the unique and traditional Senia design, which features only 17 frets, instead of the 19-21 fretted sitars that are more common today. His music portrays the unique characters of the traditional Senia baaj (playing style), which derives from certain aspects of the Veena and Dhrupad bases of Indian music. This rich amalgamation, handed down through generations of musicians of the Jaipur Senia lineage, creates the aesthetic uniqueness of the Senia baaj. This baaj puts equal emphasis on the left and the right hand skills. Wave-like rolling and gliding meeends (smooth transitions between notes) are unique features of this baaj, which characterize the distinctive melodious beauty of the Jaipur Senia gharana.
