医療社会学を専門とし、難病・希少疾患領域における患者・市民参画（PPI/E）と倫理的法的社会的課題（ELSI）を研究の中心に据えています。患者・家族・市民・医療者・研究者など多様なステークホルダーの経験や視点に着目し、質的研究を基盤としながら、量的調査を含む混合研究法（mixed methods）のアプローチも組み合わせて調査研究を行っています。これらを通じて医学研究・医療と社会との関係を検討しています。

◆ 患者・市民参画（PPI/E）の研究と実装　　難病・希少疾患の患者・家族の視点を医学研究・臨床研究に取り入れるための課題に関する調査研究を行うとともに、国内の研究プロジェクトにおける PPI/E の実装にも取り組んでいます。

◆ 希少疾患のELSI 研究　　希少疾患のゲノム医療や先端医療技術における倫理的法的社会的課題（ELSI）について、調査研究を行っています。

◆ 難病政策と公費医療の歴史社会学　　戦後日本の難病政策と公費医療制度の形成・変容について、国立療養所・国立病院の調査と公的統計資料のアーカイブズ化に基づく実証的な歴史社会学分析を行っています。

Saori Watanabe is a medical sociologist whose research focuses on patient and public involvement/engagement (PPI/E) and the ethical, legal, and social issues (ELSI) in biomedical research, with a particular focus on rare diseases. Grounded in qualitative methods, her work draws on mixed-methods and other methodological approaches to engage a wide range of stakeholders, including patients, families, citizens, clinicians, and researchers.

◆ Research on and implementation of PPI/E　　She investigates how the perspectives of patients and families with rare and intractable diseases can be meaningfully incorporated into medical and clinical research, while also implementing PPI/E in ongoing research projects in Japan.

◆ ELSI of rare diseases　　She conducts research on the ethical, legal, and social issues (ELSI) in genomic medicine and emerging biomedical technologies for rare diseases.

◆ Historical sociology of rare disease policy and public-expense medical care　　She conducts empirical historical-sociological analysis of the formation and transformation of rare disease policy and the public-expense medical care system in postwar Japan, drawing on archival research at national sanatoriums and hospitals and the systematic archiving of public statistical records.
