Dr. Santosh Nepal has been working with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) Nepal since March 2022, where he leads the water resources and climate change portfolio, focusing on hydrological assessment, climate-resilient water management, WASH, and the water–energy–food–ecosystem nexus. From 2012 to 2021, he served as Climate and Hydrology Group Lead at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), where he designed and implemented research on climate change and water resources in the Himalayan region.
With more than 18 years of professional experience, Dr. Nepal has contributed to advancing knowledge on Himalayan hydrology, climate change, climate resilience, upstream-downstream linkages, and the water, energy, food, and ecosystems nexus. His research collaborations have produced widely cited publications, including articles in Science and Nature.
He received his PhD in mountain hydrology and climate change from Friedrich Schiller University of Jena, Germany, in 2012. He also holds two master’s degrees : Environmental Management from Pokhara University and in Anthropology with a specialization in natural resources from Tribhuvan University. His bachelor’s degree was in Environmental Sciences from Tribhuvan University.
