I am a physician-scientist from Nicaragua, a Fulbright scholar, and a PhD candidate in Public Health at the University of South Florida, specializing in Global Communicable Diseases. My professional and academic journey reflects a deep commitment to addressing the global burden of infectious diseases through an integrative approach that combines bioinformatics, biostatistics, epidemiology, clinical research, infectious disease modeling, global health, and health disparities.
My research portfolio emphasizes the intersection of advanced quantitative methods and health equity. For my PhD dissertation, I investigate mortality predictors among hospitalized COVID-19 patients in Panama using survival analysis, mediation modeling, and Bayesian hierarchical frameworks to elucidate how demographic, clinical, and spatial factors contribute to disparities in outcomes. Beyond this work, I have conducted GIS-based analyses of healthcare accessibility for pediatric cancer patients in the Middle East and examined the spatial epidemiology of COVID-19 outcomes and neglected tropical diseases in Latin America.
I am currently working as a teaching assistant for Public Health Parasitology and Emerging Infectious Diseases. The focus of the parasitology course is to learn human diseases caused by parasitic infections, with emphasis on diseases of public health importance. Emerging infectious diseases address important infectious diseases and the principles of detection, diagnosis, prevention, and control as well as the impact on public health.
My MSPH research focused on the Development of specific primers to amplify Y chromosomal DNA from DNA present in the media of the molting Brugia malayi. Additionally, I was involved in epidemiological research on cutaneous and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis, which is a parasitic infection that is endemic in Nicaragua.
My goal is to gain experience as an educator and investigator on infectious diseases to conduct fundamental and applied research in the identification, evaluation, and prevention of infectious diseases, including the parasitic infections that are endemic in my home country.
